Walter Russell Koch, 96, of Novi, Michigan, passed away at home on August 20, 2020. Russell was born on June 14, 1924 in Detroit, Michigan, the second child of Walter and Marie (Flinker) Koch. His childhood included happy years in Boy Scouts, a fascination with farming and train travel, and the discovery of the printing trade during 7th grade which led him to Cass Tech High School. Soon after graduation he served as a Military Policeman in Patton’s Third Army. Post war, Russell resumed his printing business from home while earning his B.A. degree in American Literature from Wayne University.
Russell married his sweetheart Eunice on May 16, 1952 in Detroit. Together they raised two daughters, passing along their shared passion for music. From early childhood music spoke to his very core. He loved listening to the great classics on the radio, making new discoveries all the time and relaxing with his records on the turntable. Russell delighted in attending his daughters’ musical performances through the years, from early recitals, to performances in college and beyond.
From 1948-1969 Koch Printing Inc. grew through dedication, long hours, and a creative sales approach. In 1972, Russell and Allan McNabb formed Koch-McNabb Resources Inc. based in Southfield, Michigan. Representing two large printing companies, Russell simultaneously specialized in advertising design, copy writing, layout and publication of literature for the emerging Credit Union field in Michigan. This was rewarding to both the corporation and clients for close to three decades.
Upon retirement Russell was a dedicated volunteer and mentor for the Service Corps of Retired Executives Association (S.C.O.R.E.), working with young entrepreneurs and sharing his insights on moving forward in the business world.
An avid reader, Russell was often contented with a good book, music in the background and his loving family. He also dearly loved his church, volunteering in numerous capacities over the years.
He is survived by his wife Eunice, daughters Heather and Lynn, sister Barbara, plus six nieces and nephews. Business associates, family and countless friends may remember Russ as a friendly, respectful gentleman always ready to see the best in them.
Arrangements have been made for military honors and burial at Great Lakes National Cemetery for Thursday September 10, 2020 at 2:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in honor of Russ at S.C.O.R.E. Association, 477 Michigan Ave, Suite 515, Detroit, MI 48226,
