Thomas John Gardner, a cherished father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on April 1, 2024, at the age of 89. He was born on May 10, 1934, in Detroit, Michigan, to his beloved parents, Edmund and Teresa Gardner.
Tom leaves behind a legacy of love and family. He was the loving father of Nancy Bearden, Peggy (late Matthew) Burke, Mary Gardner, Teresa (George) Wrathell, Patty Tosto, Thomas (Elena) Gardner Jr., and Janet (Dustin) Popa, and was survived by their mother, Carol Gardner. His memory is further treasured by his grandchildren: Christine (Nick) Tsouris, Marc Bearden (Robyn Schurtz), Steven (Laurisa) Burke, Brendan (Kristan) Burke, Robby Lopez, Shawn Wrathell (Nick Foster), Ryan (Melissa) Wrathell, Kyle Wrathell, Melissa (Bob) Thelen, Brian (Michelle) Tosto, Catherine Gardner, Thomas Gardner, and Nathan Popa. He was also a great-grandfather to 18 adoring great-grandchildren and uncle to Kathy (Scott) Bruning and Paul (Heather) Gardner . Preceding him in death was his brother, Robert (Cullina) Gardner.
Tom dedicated 30 years of his life to Michigan Bell. Beyond his professional pursuits, Tom found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He relished spending time with his family, embarking on road trips to explore Michigan's lighthouses, and indulging in woodworking. An avid sports enthusiast, Tom particularly enjoyed football and Detroit Tigers baseball games, where he would savor his favorite treat, a hotdog.
Tom's infectious sense of humor, selflessness, and unwavering calmness made him a beacon of light for his family during both calm and stormy times. He had a passion for trains, cars, and dogs, which further enriched his life.
Visitation for Tom will be held on Friday, April 5, 2024, from 4-8pm, with a scripture reading at 7pm at the Harry J. Will Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will take place on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at 12:00 PM (in state 11:30 am) at St. Kenneth Catholic Church-Plymouth. Tom will be laid to rest at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
In honoring Tom's memory, let us remember his warmth, kindness, and the love he shared with all who knew him. May he rest in peace, surrounded by the everlasting love of his family and friends.
