Marie Cole was born Marie Marcoux in Ontario, Canada in 1922, the first- born child of Isabella and Joseph Marcoux. She was 3 years old when her family moved to Detroit. She grew up with two sisters and a brother.
When Marie was older, she and her cousin Barbara used to go to the Boblo boat downtown where there was always dancing on Friday nights. It was there that she met and fell in love with her soulmate, Gordon Cole. Gordon and Marie had six children; Gordon, Jr., Marianne, Nancy, Barb, Richie and Rob. Marie's biggest heartbreak was when Richie was hit by a car and killed when he was 11 years old. When Gordon was disabled by Alzheimer's disease, he became bedridden and Marie took care of him at home for three years. They had been married for almost 52 years when he died in 1996. Marie then moved in with her daughter Marianne in Canton, and became active in the Canton Senior Center. She served as president of the Pioneers Social Club and started her acting career there in their comedy plays. She was a natural. When climbing the stairs became too difficult for her, she moved back to her house on Fenton, which she and Gordon had built in 1952. There she has lived with her son Gordon Jr. and his family.
Marie was the matriarch of the family, loved and respected by everyone who knew her. She has 13 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. She was affectionately known as "Little Gramma" being only 4'7" tall.
Marie was 100 when she died, outliving her husband and her 3 siblings.
A Memorial Gathering for Marie will be held Saturday, February 25, 2023 beginning at 11am, followed by a Memorial Service at 12pm at Harry J Will Funeral Home, Livonia.
