Our mother, Karen Irene Schaefer Martin, of Plymouth, MI, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2020, at the age of 77 after a short illness. She was born on August 17, 1942, in Chillicothe, IL, to Ernest and Frieda Hartter Schaefer. She was married at the age of 18 to our dad and our early years were spent moving to several states, including Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, before settling in Plymouth, MI, where she resided for the past 46 years. Her outgoing, friendly personality allowed her to settle in quickly and confidently wherever she was planted.
Mom gave her life to the Lord as a young mother and grew in her spirituality, setting an example for us of quiet steadfast faith in God and trust in Jesus. She filled her mind and heart with the Word, often listening to or reading sermons to fill her time. She was a member of the Apostolic Christian Church for 55 years, where she lent her voice to the choir and actively served with her other talents. In addition to inviting people for dinner and being known for her hospitality, Mom also enjoyed decorating, reading and collecting books, and tending her flower garden.
She was the best Mom to us: Terri (Ryan) Huber of Stanford, IL; Kenneth (Christine) Martin of Mooresville, NC; and Julie Crawford of Plymouth, MI. Her legacy continues in her grandchildren: Allen Huber and his fiancée, Erika, Sheryl (Nick) Kaiser, Craig (Chelsea) Huber, Julia Martin, Jason Martin, Jessica Dawson, Nicole Dawson, and Drew Dawson. She was preceded in death by her beloved sister, Josephine Schaefer.
Private services for her local church congregation and immediate family will be Saturday, July 11, 2020, at the Livonia Apostolic Christian Church at 11:00 a.m. with visiting line at 10:30. Burial will be at the Glen Eden Memorial Park. Harry J. Will Funeral Home is assisting the family with services. Memorials may be made to: Apostolic Christian LifePoints, 2125 Veterans Road, Morton, IL 61550; Ashes to Glory Foundation P.O. Box 532176, Livonia, MI 48153.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.HarryjWillLivonia.com for the Martin family.
