My wife and I have stopped in to Conner’s many times now that we are back living in Michigan. We try and say hello to Mary or just have a great breakfast or lunch. I will ALWAYS remember Joe’s smile and awesome friendship.!

I read Rita's note today and wanted to also share a Conner story as I too was a Conner Alumni.  I began working as a busboy at 14 and that is when I met Joe.  I had great interest in becoming a cook and at 15 Joe was my mentor and a cook I became.  It was back in the Mr. Hackett days and the only one that could truly please Mr. Hackett was Joe.  

I knew based on Joe's dedication and work effort along with his kindness he was born to run and then own a restaurant.  So glad he achieved his calling as it was the perfect outlet for him to make a difference for so many.   We  intermittently stayed in touch over the years and today driving by Conner's seeing  the parking lot jammed full is indicative of how much he meant to all of us.   He was so kind to my dear late Dad and I know they are having a blast. Thanks Joe!      

Surely missed by so many people that great smile and laugh.  Best boss I ever had.  This candle is for you.

      My sincerest condolences for your loss. Many years have passed since the days when we were kids celebrating the Maceri family get togethers. Whether it was at Uncle Sy and Aunt Rosemaries house or at  my parents Tony & Josephine Maceri’s house in St. Clair Shores, we came together to celebrate family and eat some of the most fantastic Italian food ever! 
     I’ll always remember my cousin Joe for his big contagious smile and laughter. I remember Joe wanting to open a restaurant of his own and Uncle Sy would speak very proudly of Joe and how hard Joe worked to achieve his dreams. 
     My heartfelt condolences go out to cousins Paul, Christine, and Jimmy Maceri. Lord please hear my prayers for the Family & Friends of Joe. Keep them in your living care in peace and comfort. AMEN.

We  just moved here from PA and on a recommendation stopped in Connors before mass. Turned out we didn’t have time to eat so decided to leave and come back after. Didn’t think anything of it. Returned as planned and were reading the menu in line when this man walks up to us apologizing profusely for our dissatisfaction.  Took a minute to figure it out what he was talking about then shared a laugh and excellent lunch conversation!  That was February 2007 and we have been regulars ever since. 

We are better people for getting to know Joe, Mari and the kids, and so unbelievably sad that he’s gone.

I was at Connor's  last Saturday 3-7-20. My daughter Rachel and I were visiting the area again from TVC . I met Joe's wife Mari that day and found out about Joe. I was saddened and very surprised to here what had happened to Joe. I would always look forward to stopping in and get a good meal and always say hello and talk to Joe who was  always polite and friendly.  I worked with Joe at Conner's in 1970 with my friend Phil. Joe was a very hard worker (cook) at that time. You could not be around better company. He was always kind, professional, concerned about others and excellent cook.  Now when I would visit the Northville area I would always try to stop in and get a good meal. In fact I was there in Jan. not long after New Years 2020 with a friend who had never been there. Joe I will miss you! May the Peace & Grace of The Lord Jesus be with your Family Brother.  The Szamatowicz Family

I haven't wanted to write this as it makes it too real and I don't want it to be real.  I know you are in the loving arms of our Lord and that gives me great comfort but it doesn't stop the waves of sadness at times.  But I now know the meaning of the song, 'God only cries for the living'.  Joe you touched so many lives.  Your storytelling was always fun and your laughter contagious.  I have so many memories from our childhood and into adulthood. You were bigger than life with many roles;  son, brother, friend, husband and father.  Whenever you spoke of Mari, Chris and Rachel you spoke  with such pride and joy.   A great brother who always helped me with my chores and made me laugh. You know the secrets of the ages now and I know when I will see you again you will have a grand (and probably a bit embellished) story to tell.  Until then, I will carry you with me in my heart and in my memories. Rest now, little brother for you are home, no goodbyes, just anticipation for a grand reunion. 

When my Brother Paul wrote our family to tell of us Joe's passing the emails between my siblings flew quickly with messages of deep sadness and shock!  So many good memories at Connor's with Joe always there to make us smile, especially my Mom!  And to me, it was yet another sad passing of a member of one of the Founding Families of St. Sabina, led by Sy and Rose Marie.  Joe's kindness and incredible devotion to his work and the People who came there, all part of what he was taught in the importance of a community.  I am thankful I knew Joe and his family, that his brother Jim, is so close to my brother, and that all the Maceri's, Abraham's, Fichuk's and so many others will someday reunite again! My sisters and I frequented Connors, on Telegraph, for years and could always rely on Joe's smiling face and kind words, especially during our time of taking care of our ill father, Andrew Salach and then our mother, Ann Salach.
His food was always delicious and of the highest quality, and never a Thursday passed when we weren't putting in an order for our family favorite, City Chicken.!!
We would stop in to Connors on Haggery Rd. and received the same kind and genuine service , not to mention the  high quality of delicious food!!
We will miss him so very much. We know his family has been extraordinarily proud of him and has passed this on to his son, whom we would see at the restaurant.
Our deepest condolences to the Maceri  Family. We will remember you and Joe in our prayers.

We will miss Joe sitting with us when we came in to eat.  He would share his casino stories and ventures here, in Vegas and Beau Rivage.  Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this sad time. 

My brother.... my friend.

I am overwhelmed with the kind words from everyone.  Of course, I knew his heart and kindness because he never complained about having his “baby brother “ tag along with him and his friends.  

Joe..... you would have been so proud of Mari, Christopher and Rachel who put on strong faces to embrace the hundreds and hundreds of friends and customers that were grieving also.  You did well my brother raising those kids and Mari...well she is one of the strongest women I’ve ever met.

Say hi to mom & dad for me, I can’t even imagine the look on moms face when the “golden child” came to heavens gate.  For now you rest and soon my grief will turn to joy as our memories together come to me.  My faith teaches me we will see each other again and that thought brings me comfort.

Thank you God for giving me the best big brother ever, hold him in your arms and warm him with your love until we see each other again.

From my first days a Police Officer, Joe always treated me with respect . He was a true friend and I will always treasure the time we spent together. You will be missed Brother Joe! 

I feel like a part of my childhood left this world with Joe. He was always so kind and welcoming to my Grandma and Grandpa, Louis & Vicki Gruszka and my parents Norman & Rose Reyburn.  Connor’s was always on the must visit list the minute we arrived in Michigan. In fact, I have very few memories of visiting my parents and grandparents in Michigan without Joe in them somewhere. 

I am so grateful that my boys got a chance to really meet and talk to him this past April. In his usual way, he greeted us like we were family and genuinely listened to updates on what we have been doing. Even when the restaurant was slammed, which was often, he never failed to come and say hello and ask about the family. He always made sure that we were taken care of and he had a really great laugh. One of the best, really. You could not help but smile when he chuckled.

I will never forget his kindness when my grandparents passed away. Never.

His genuine and thoughtful ways have permeated some of the happiest family memories I have. Very few people in the world can see someone months or years apart and still remember their favorite meal. He always remembered mine. That is just the kind of guy he was. He remembered the seemingly small details that meant so much to so many. 

My heart is broken  for his family. I can’t imagine what life will be like for them without him.  He was a good guy. The world needs more of those, so I don’t understand why he had to go so soon. Sending my love to everyone that knew and loved him. He will be sincerely missed, but never forgotten. 

I was very saddened to hear of the passing of Mr. Maceri.  He was such a kind and generous person -- gone too soon.

Growing up in Dearborn Heights and attending St. Sabina there are many families and people we will never forget, including Joe and the Maceri family. One memory that is so Joe is how he went out of his way to make my sister feel welcome when she transferred to Riverside High School after Rosary HS closed. She would come home from school with Joe stories from drama class that had us all in tears. In later years, he was most kind and respectful to our parents and extended family he met at Connors by recognizing our last name.  He truly was one of a kind. Our hearts are with you all at this sad time. May you find peace and comfort in your happy memories and knowing he has moved on to his heavenly reward.

I met Joe as a 14 year old teenager working at Conner's as a busboy 50 years ago when he was 15.  He and I eventually cooked together on the busiest shifts. I remember this like it was yesterday.  He rose up the ladder quickly and was born to run a restaurant and I knew that way back then.  I have vivid memories of that time in my life as it was full of fun and adventure.  Our first cars who was the fastest cook, what waitressess were going to be on our shift lol, who could you count on and that was always Joe.  Over the years I always found myself visiting Joe and it was always a pleasure as we would discuss the 1970's over and over again.  Joe was a terrific man always added a compliment and the very last time I was in by myself to see him was very typical of his thoughtfulness.   He asked "how is Nancy doing been a while since I have seen her."  I will miss Joe very much but also know that he will be with many loved ones that he knows from his lifetime of serving customers and they will rejoice with him.  I am very sorry for your unexpected loss of a wonderful man.

Joe and I go back at least to our first jobs at the Telegraph Connors in high school!

You don't always meet a person like Joe in your life. He was the perfect example of someone knowing and doing what he wanted to in life. He was the best at what he did and enjoyed it, too.

We lost a really good man this week....Joe was a kind, gentle, hard working soul....I first met him with my father...he was washing dishes at our favorite restaurant near Dad’s shop. Joe ended up owning the restaurant that he started as a dishwasher at....his work ethic and kind soul became a hallmark of a life well lived in service of his faith and in his community. We are so sorry for your loss.  Joe was a wonderful man who made you feel welcome whenever you came to Connor's.  He would also ask about our grandchildren because they were there with us a lot when they were younger.

My parents had their noon meal daily at the original restaurant.  Joe and many of the staff came to my Mom's funeral.  When the Northville restaurant opened, I brought their picture to show Joe, and was amazed that he remembered their names after all that time.  I've known Joe for many, many years, and he never changed.  My condolences to his family.  He was so proud of you!

Very sorry to hear about Joe's passing.  I used to go to Conners as a kid with my mom and family a lot.  My mother worked across the parking lot at Pico's Taco's.  I remember Dorothy and Rita serving and Joe was cooking as I got older. I happened to hear about Conners in Plymouth  and stopped in with my wife. Saw Joe and asked if he remembered us. He ,of course did. We caught up with him some. Rest in peace Joe.

Story of a lady who struggled and built a restaurant chain, her struggles and worry about maintaining a restaurant...he never saw the movie..wished to find the movie for him as a little gift, but never did...so unexpected and sudden.....He was always so welcoming and seemed to be everyone's good buddy!

So shocked to see that Joe had passed. We so enjoyed coming to lunch and dinner at Connor’s and sit with Joe and listen to his stories about his winnings at the casino, his Mustang that he loved as well as the stories about his family. Mari, Chris and Rachel...I’m so very sorry for your loss, much too soon!  I worked at Connors on Telegraph for a few years in the late 70’s and early 80’s, along with my brother Mark Mazur, and mother Rita Mazur. That was my first “real” job, and I have fond memories of those years. Joe was an excellent manager and I thank him for being my first employer to instill work ethic!  They don’t come like Joe anymore...there have been plenty of times when dining out with my family I would comment, “Joe would never have let us get by with that”!  RIP Joe. God bless all of you!

Mari, Chris and Rachel...we are so sorry that you lost such a wonderful man....  Joe will never be forgotten, as he will live on in our hearts and with the memories we have of him.  He was such a nice person to see first thing in the morning.  It started our day off so much better.    We loved talking to him......sharing stories.  We did not know Joe very long,  but after sitting with him it felt like we knew him all our lives. Once you became his friend, we knew we would be one forever.

So sorry to hear about Joe's passing. What a wonderful man. Always smiling and friendly. My family went to Connor's in Dearborn Heights when my father still lived in Redford. Food was always fantastic. My husband and I were thrilled to find the restaurant was now on the west side, and made an effort to stop when we were in the area. So nice to see Joe still smiling, still friendly, still serving wonderful food. He will be remembered fondly by so many. Rest in peace Joe.

We knew some of the same people and traded stories with Joe, when we'd come in for a quick light breakfast. Our favorite seat was at the Plymouth restaurant counter, because we were sure to chat up the employees and also Joe. He was always so welcoming and appreciative of his customers. We are so sorry that his family and the community has lost such a great guy.

For many years Connors was our lunch spot with my dad, Otis Smith DDS. We enjoyed the warm smile Joe greeted us with every work day lunch, his fantastic soup and 1/2 sandwich specials( our dad loved the price), his fantastic chocolate pie but most importantly I’m so grateful for the compassion Joe showed my dad in the later years of his life. 

Joe always had a kind word for everyone and made everyone feel at home. You could also tell the employees were more like family and made  everyone feel a part of it. He will be missed greatly; our hearts and prayers go out to Mari, Chris, Rachel and the rest of your family.

I think I can say on behalf of my entire family, Joe ALWAYS made us feel at home and like family when we saw him.   Long live Mr. Maceri. I worked for him a few years ago and I could just tell how hard of a worker and how real of a person he had to be to get to where he was at. He deserved to be the owner of a restaurant because he worked for it. That shows that he did exactly what he wanted in life and listened to himself, which is a beautiful way to live. I knew Joe from the time he washed dishes at Conners on Telegraph Rd.  I worked at Bi-Lo Grocery next door and ate there often.  My wife (who I met at Bi-Lo), brothers and Mom, like I, loved Joe very much.  We visited the 5 Mile store many times always getting a long hug from Joe.  RIP buddy.  Will miss you and thanks for all the love.

Although I met Mr Maceri only once at WMU where his daughter, Rachel, received an award for her outstanding academic achievements,  I could tell immediately that his family was his joy. He was so proud of Rachel and pleased with her choice of life partner, Jordan. The excitement of wedding preparations was part of the conversation, and I could see tremendous love for his own bride, daughter, and future son in law. Such an untimely loss for the family and community.  Grieving doesn't have a schedule or time frame; know you are circled with love and support.

What a great loss.  Joe was a special man.  Joe gave the Horvath brothers their first jobs almost 40 years ago.  Our Mom, Marge adored him.  I can just hear mom when she runs into him in Heaven "Joe what the hell are you doing here?" Joe was such a dear friend, who loved you, his family, and proudly built his exceptional Connor’s  Family restaurant in Northville where we always got a warm smile and delicious meal.  We enjoyed our laughs and conversations as we solved world problems and caught up on family news. He has a very deep faith and was just a wonderful, kind man. May Perpetual light shine upon him, and God grant him eternal rest. Hoping that your many happy memories will help you all at this very difficult time. So glad you took the trip to Italy with St. Ken’s when you did.  He was so happy you made it to Italy. 

Joe was my brother, friend and support when needed. He never left a friends side, always there with a hug and a wink.  I will never forget Joe one of the most genuine and real person I have ever known. Joe gave me my first job at Connors,  during high school Jim and I would play racketball with him before school a couple times a week. I'll remember his smile and laugh and the twinkle in his eyes. After Debbie and I got married, and had Adam and Andrew, when he saw us, he always had a hug, which was followed with a story. Family was the most important thing to him,  and we all will miss him very much. Love and prayers for his family.

Joe was such an awesome caring person.  The way he treated my parents was unbelievable.  Always spoke to them during their dinners or lunches.  Always asked me how my parents are doing. What a wonderful man. You will be missed Joe!!

Joe was such a fun loving and kind person.  We had so much fun with "Hollywood Joe".  My dad use to say Joe never stopped smiling.  But I told my Dad, if you didn't pick up Mr. Hackett's burger when it was ready--he gave you such a look! The last time I had lunch with him, he was beaming and so proud of his family.  I could tell he loved his family so much.  God bless his family.

Joe and I washed dishes and flipped Patty Melts at Connor’s when we were in High School. Then I blinked and…he owned the place! Truly amazing! We remained lifelong friends and he was the Best Man in our wedding – hamming it up with a charming toast of course. Joe was always a member of our family. He was the fifth Priebe on our bowling team with Chris, Dave, Pops and myself for many, many years - where he forever came to be known and remembered as “Hollywood Joe”.  I have lots of  awesome, fun memories including many Tiger games, courtesy of  Joe’s Dad. Joe was possibly the happiest, most positive person I ever met. And such an awesome Family Man. It was always a treat to be greeted and seated by him at the restaurant that he loved so much. We are so sorry for Mari Dawn, Chris and Rachel. Thoughts and prayers from Mike, Cindy and Patrick.


May the  Good Lord  welcome  Joe as he always welcomed us to Connors, both at the Telegraph location and  at the Five Mile  restaurant.

Deepest sympathy to the Moceri family from the John Winnicker family.  Joe was such a good-hearted soul.  May he rest in peace.  

  

Like all the Priebe kids, Joe was my first boss.   He set the bar pretty high.  We always had so much fun - it was like he wasn’t my boss, but was my friend and my big brother.    He always be a part of the Priebe family and will be greatly missed.  All my love and prayers to Mari Dawn, Chris and Rachel .
