She graduated from Wayne State University in 1952 with a degree in education, a pursuit that marked the beginning of her lifelong passion for teaching and guiding others. Jean was a beloved dance instructor for the Detroit Parks and Recreation Department, where she taught for many years at local recreation centers, spreading joy and the art of dance to many.
Jean's heart, however, was most fully expressed through her love for the Lord and her unwavering Christian faith. She was a devoted member of Trinity Baptist Church in Warren, Michigan, where she was deeply involved in the Pioneer Girls program, mentoring young ladies in their spiritual journeys. Jean was known for her warm hospitality, often hosting gatherings in her home to connect with friends and strengthen the bonds of her church community. Her influence on those around her was immeasurable, as she lived a life that led by example, helping many find their way to Christ.
In addition to her devotion to her faith and family, Jean was an incredibly talented seamstress, with a special love for quilting. Her quilts, filled with love and care, remain cherished by her family. Jean also created lasting memories through her family’s camping trips to northern Michigan, a tradition that brought joy and togetherness to her loved ones.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Phil and Marie Sinnamon; her beloved husband, Arthur Tomes, whom she married in 1956 after meeting at a youth dance at the Parks and Recreation Department in Detroit where they were both chaperoning; her daughter, Mary Jean Sherwood; and her two siblings.
She is survived by her three daughters, Dorothy (Brian) Moore, Barbara (Joel) Messina, and Rebecca (Steven) Irwin; her son-in-law, Michael Sherwood; and her grandchildren, Jennifer (Paul), Matthew, Marc (Nicolle), Joel Jr. (Lauren), Adam (Emily), Steven (Lindsey), Stephanie (Jeffrey), Cody (Haley), Zachery, and Emma (William).
