Hugh was born in Fort Stewart, Georgia to his parents Hugh Larkin, Jr. and Josephine Larkin on July 10, 1962. Hugh grew up in Livonia, Michigan, and played competitive hockey throughout his youth eventually being drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs. He has two surviving brothers, Joseph (Fran) and John (Soraya) and his father, Hugh Jr. He attended Livonia Catholic Schools and Brother Rice High School before moving to Canada to play in the Ontario Hockey League. Hugh met the love of his life Carolyn Drahos in 1981 and they married in 1989. They were married for 33 years, and that union produced two wonderful children: Hannah (26), a graduate of Central Michigan University and Huey (23) currently attending Western Michigan University and playing ice hockey for WMU's Broncos.
Hugh attended college but decided a desk job was not for him. He had a 25 year long career with the Royal Oak Fire Department, as a firefighter/paramedic and finished his career with the rank of Captain. Hugh also inspired and touched the lives of many young and upcoming hockey players on the many teams that he coached. Despite being diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer, he continued to live an active life which included playing hockey, boating and snowmobiling. He always attempted to live his life to the fullest!
Hugh was a proud and active Roman Catholic. He did not miss Mass, sang loudly at church, and regularly said the Rosary. He volunteered for many charitable activities including St. Christine's Soup Kitchen and Knights of Columbus. He will be greatly missed as a husband, father, son, brother, coach, and comrade of his firefighting team.
