Elizabeth (Betty)(Cioci) Pluto passed away peacefully on April 16, 2025, at Angela Hospice in Livonia Mi. Betty was born on March 19, 1937. She grew up in Hamtramck and retired to Livonia 23 years ago. Betty is survived by her dear friend, Sister Nancy Marie Jamroz. She was predeceased by her parents, Thomas and Sophie Pluto, brothers Robert (Ann), Eugene (Joanne), William (Donna), and sister, Mary Anne (Walter)Artymovich; nephews William Artymovich, Jimmy Pluta, Johnny Artymovich and niece Nancy Hoffmann. She is survived by nieces and nephews, Kathy (Nick)Holowka, Thomas (Pat)Pluta, Barbara (Alex)Carrillo, Robert (Elaine)Artymovich, David (Colleen)Pluta, Wayne Pluto, Johnny Pluto, Lisa Pluto, Susan (Jim)Deemer, Lynne (Greg)Peters, Billy Pluto, Kim (Kevin) Clary, and many great nieces and nephews.
Betty dedicated her life to teaching and being a school administrator. She was appointed the first female superintendent of the Hamtramck Public School System. She was chosen to head up one of the first government sponsored Head Start programs in the country. Betty was a very loving and generous person and enjoyed spending time at her cottage on Crystal Lake in the Irish Hills area. She created a strong bond with her elementary and high school teachers the Sylvania Franciscan Sisters and with the Felician Sisters. She was one of the first Felician Associates and was a friend to Madonna University. She was also a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa education sorority and Lions Club of Livonia.
Betty will be remembered dearly and lovingly missed by everyone who was fortunate to meet her and could call her a friend or neighbor.
Services will be held on Friday May 2, 2025, at St Edith Catholic Church 15089 Newburgh Rd, Livonia MI, 48154. Visitation will begin at 2:00pm with a Rosary at 3:00pm and Funeral Mass at 5:30pm. A Celebration of Betty’s Life will continue immediately following the Mass. An interment will take place at 11:00 am on Saturday May 3, 2025 at Parkview Memorial Cemetery in Livonia.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Angela Hospice, Felician Sisters of North America or the Franciscan Sisters of Sylvania.
