Dora M. Rautiola, 61, passed away on June 7, 2020 surrounded by her family. Born and raised in Ann Arbor, Dora graduated from Pioneer High School in 1977 before attending Michigan State University to pursue a degree in Art Preservation. That plan changed in 1979, however, when she was swept off her feet by Jeff Rautiola, and with whom she began 37 years of marriage in May of 1983.
Always up for an adventure, Dora traveled to Sierra Leone, all over the United States, and to several countries in Europe. With Jeff and their growing family in tow, they lived in California, Norway, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and then Brazil, before returning to southeast Michigan.
If you asked about her greatest adventure, however, she’d gladly tell you about the joys of raising her three daughters, and more recently, her granddaughter. Dora would also tell you about the days when skinned knees, hurt feelings or growing pains were comforted by hugs and short prayers together. She poured her heart and soul into each of the girls, and they now reflect in great measure her thoughtful and caring nature.
Dora was an expert seamstress who loved to fashion unique pieces for each person and established a reputation for designs that truly exceeded her clients’ expectations. Her distinctive creations were admired throughout the figure skating, dancing, and pageant communities, as well as with brides preparing for their special day. As a long-time president of the Garden City Figure Skating Club, she encouraged the development of hundreds of skaters, including Heidy and Elyssa, both of whom skated competitively for many years.
Dora was an avid gardener who loved spending her evenings with family in the backyard. With Jeff and the girls, she created her own sanctuary of trees and flowers – a secret garden – and her creations were twice selected by the Canton Garden Club to be included on their annual Garden Walk.
Always up for a chat over coffee or a comforting hug, Dora’s smile, giving heart, and unconditional love will be greatly missed.
Dora was preceded in death by her mother Heidy Huizenga and brother Mike Huizenga (Ann Huizenga). She is survived by her husband Jeff; daughters Lauren Rautiola (Ryan Place), Heidy Rautiola, Elyssa Kayser (Terry Kayser); granddaughter Cierra Rautiola; sister Sharon Huizenga (Patricia Cleary); brother Ted Huizenga (Sandy Huizenga), and dozens of nieces, nephews, and their children.
