Born in Detroit, MI on June 24, 1927, to Harry and Evelyn (Dostie) Merritt, Donald had a love for life that was contagious. He enlisted in the Navy during World War 2, where he served his country with honor, and was awarded the AM Campaign Medal and WW2 Victory Medal.
Donald had an active social life well into his golden years and could hold a conversation with anyone. He was always open to trying new things, and had friends spanning multiple generations. Despite his age, Donald was always youthful and full of life. He enjoyed traveling and exploring new places, but more than anything, he cherished his family. Marge, his wife of 70 years, meant the world to him. Donald was a devoted husband who raised his family in Redford with love and care. He was the proud father of two children, who brought him immense joy and pride throughout his life. Donald adored his four grandchildren, whom he loved spending time with, and was fortunate enough to meet his three-month-old great granddaughter before he passed away.
Donald's faith was also an important part of his life. He was an active member of St. Agatha Catholic Church and later attended St. Aiden's. His love for his community and church was evident in his kind and selfless nature, and he was a man of integrity and principle who always did the right thing above all.
Preceded in death by his brothers and sister Harold, Gerald and Patricia, Donald will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him. He is survived by his wife Marjorie; children Deborah (Ronald) Jaskot and James (Mary) Merritt; grandchildren Christopher (Patricia) Jaskot, Kelly Jaskot, Brendon (Cassie) Merritt and Daniel Merritt; and great granddaughter Isabel Jaskot.
Donald's infectious laughter, positive attitude, and zest for life will continue to inspire us all. As we say our final goodbyes to Donald, we find comfort in knowing that his legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched and the memories that will be cherished forever.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Thursday, April 20, 2023 at 9:30am (In state will begin at 9am) at St. Aidan Catholic Church in Livonia.
