Denis Venant Soucy (full name: Joseph Denis Venant Philibert Soucy) was born to a family of nine children in Saint-Rémi, Quebec, Canada on December 10, 1946. He passed away peacefully on Dec 14, 2023 at his home in Lansing, Michigan just days after his 77th birthday.
He is survived by his three sons, Chris, Brad, and Nick; their partners, Sara, Lauren, and Felecia (respectively), and three grandchildren: Sylvia, Charlie, and Reed.
A retired toolmaker, machinist and business owner, Denis was a quietly-insightful, hilarious and courteous man. He was a dedicated and loving father, instilling an ethic of critical thinking, honesty and compassion in his sons. He lived a principled life underscored by a deep integrity and intellectual curiosity.
Denis was selfless, quick to help others and never sought the spotlight. He would never sing his own praises, so we will proudly sing for him.
He enjoyed his solitude as much as he enjoyed family time with his three adult sons and their families. In his later years, he also spent time with friends who lived in his complex, called Riverfront Apartments.
Despite his quiet approach to life, his impact on the world will not go unnoticed. He enjoyed cooking, learning, home repairs, building, problem-solving and philosophizing about existential questions with a signature humor that made being in his presence an unforgettable joy. His legacy, kindness and worldviews are carried on with love by his three sons and grandchildren.
Denis had an unstoppable work ethic, and an allegiance to fairness. He diligently provided for his family and committed himself to the excellence and artistry of his work as a machinist, toolmaker and business owner.
He had a healthy disdain for religion that helped inform his lifestyle of enjoying existence for all its ups and downs—without concerns of an afterlife. His morality was intrinsic. His virtue was forged in the architecture of his DNA.
Denis’s views may best be captured by Nabokov’s famous insight: “Our existence is but a brief crack of light between two eternities of darkness.”
