July 4, 1941 to Cyril and Anne Rose and later welcomed baby sister Donna to the family.
Dave’s godly parents were instrumental in sharing the gospel with him, and he fondly reminisced about
the profound impact of seeing his father kneeling in prayer for him. Dave grew up in Detroit and was
active in the Salvation Army Detroit Citadel Church. He played percussion in the band and later taught
adult Bible classes. He graduated from Mackenzie High School in 1959, attended Detroit Bible
College, and graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a bachelor’s degree and a master’s
degree.
Dave married Margaret Staiger in 1962 and together they raised two daughters. The family made
Ward Presbyterian their church home in 1982. In addition to regularly attending Sunday services, Dave
sang in the choir, taught adult Bible classes, and accepted responsibilities on boards and
committees. Dave was devoted to his family, working in the Lincoln Park school district for 31 years
teaching math and other subjects. In addition, he spent many years teaching driver’s education during the
off season. Dave had the patience of Job.
After Margaret’s death in 1987, Dave met Sharen Youngren through Ward Church, and the two were
married in 1988. Dave and Sharen were very active at Ward and have enjoyed the fellowship and support
of their church family over the years. They also enjoyed traveling together, including several international
cruises, trips to Israel, Minneapolis, and Branson, Missouri, as well as visits with family and friends
wherever they might be.
Dave enjoyed reading, studying and memorizing Scripture, spending time with his loved ones (and his
dogs!), exercising, golfing with friends, and making his “famous” meatloaf.
Dave loved his family. He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife, Margaret. He is
survived by his beloved wife, Sharen; his cherished sister, Donna; his children, Karin (Sam) and Julie
(Ron); and his grandchildren, Nathan, Hannah, Luke, and Kamille.
Throughout his life, Dave held firmly to his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Even in his last days, he recited
Scripture and wanted to pray for others.
David knew his Lord, his Heavenly Father, his Shepherd.
“Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of Lord
forever” (Psalm 23:6).
A few of Dave’s personal sayings:
“We cannot choose to be chosen - but we can choose to be obedient.”
“The most fulfilled people in the world are those who discover God’s will and then have the courage to go
and do it.”
“We live in His presence and are shepherded by His providence.”
