Alan Lee Brace, a devoted husband, loving father, cherished grandfather, and distinguished veteran, passed away on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at the age of 75. He died peacefully at his home in Livonia, surrounded by his family.
Alan was born on October 10, 1948, in Corry, Pennsylvania, to Marion and Rachel Brace, both of whom preceded him in death. He was the beloved husband of Barbara Brace, whom he married on February 6, 1971, in Fort Worth, Texas, after meeting at West Point Military Academy, where Barbara's father was stationed. Their enduring love and partnership spanned over five decades and created a legacy full of wonderful memories.
Alan was a graduate of West Point, where he excelled as a Captain and Army Ranger. He continued his education at Pepperdine University, earning a Master's Degree. His professional career at General Motors as a Project Engineer specialized in hydromatics and included the achievement of several patents for his innovative contributions to automotive technology.
Beyond his career, Alan was a dedicated educator, serving as a substitute teacher in the Dearborn Heights School District and as an advisor for the CAD Program at Annapolis High School, where he inspired students in the art of bridge building and engineering.
Alan's passion for martial arts was profound, culminating in his attainment of a 6th Degree Black Belt in Tang Soo Do. He was an avid practitioner and instructor, sharing his expertise with enthusiasm and dedication. Alan's diverse interests also included karate, fishing, gardening, woodworking, choir singing, reading, sewing, tatting, mechanics, and baking. His hobbies enriched his life and brought joy to those around him.
Alan was a devoted family man, deeply proud of his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Barbara; his son Kevin (Jess) Brace; his daughter Heather Brace; his daughter Kerrie (Doug) Giszczynski; his grandchildren Selah Brace, Holden Brace, Ciera Almanza, and Jacob Giszczynski; his brother Jerry Brace; his sister Wendy Brace; and remembered fondly his late sister Sally Burke.
Alan Lee Brace will be remembered for his unwavering integrity, his commitment to family and community, and his passion for lifelong learning and teaching. His legacy of love, strength, and service will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.
A Funeral Service will take place at 11:00 am on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at the Harry J. Will Funeral Home, 37000 Six Mile Road, Livonia, Michigan 48152. Alan’s family will receive visitors at the funeral home on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm, and again on Wednesday from 10:00 am until the time of service at 11:00 am. In accordance with Alan’s wishes, cremation will follow. At a later date, Alan’s ashes will be laid to rest at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan.
