Yvonne Min-Fen Li, MD, our beloved mother and grandmother, friend and doctor, peacefully passed away at her home on January 10, 2016. Many family and friends were by her side on the day she passed away. She will now join her loving husband, Hsien “James” Li who passed away on July 4, 2009.
Dr. Li is survived by her beloved children: Alexander, James and Frederick and two grandchildren-Atticus and Lucien. She also leaves behind seven siblings, numerous nephews and nieces and beloved friends.
Dr. Li was born in Shanghai, China on January 23, 1941. Due to the fact that she was an accomplished volleyball player, she was finally able to leave China for Hong Kong on 1958. Despite speaking very little English, she received full scholarship to attend the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton Texas. She then completed her master degree in biochemistry in Iowa State University.
After working for nearly 10 years in the pharmaceutical industry, she went on to medical school in the Philippines at the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay in Manila, Philippines. She then returned and settled in New Jersey to complete her internal medicine residency at St. Barnabas and oncology fellowship at Newark Beth Israel. Over the years, she had a thriving practice in South Orange, Millburn and Livingston.
Guest visitations and viewing will occur between 3pm-8pm on Friday, January 15. Services will be between on Saturday between 9:30am-10:30am at Quinn-Hopping Funeral Hoe on 145 East Mt. Pleasant Avenue, Livingston NJ 07039 with interment to follow at Glendale Cemetery in Bloomfield. .
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made under Yvonne Li’s name at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center Foundation, 21 Lyons Avenue, Newark NJ, 07112.
