Stephen Jay Bernstein, age 72, Rockaway, N.J., died peacefully at home on February 14, 2023, after a brief battle with esophageal cancer. He is survived by his wife Jean Levitan, sons Matthew and Michael (Danielle), grandson Henry, brother Alan (Heidi), stepmother Barbara, and in-laws Richard (Susan) and Nancy. Born in Philadelphia, he spent his childhood in Westfield, N.J. but returned to Philly for graduate school and work. He was a proud Penn State graduate (1972), earned a JD from Villanova University (1975), and an MBA from Temple University (1983). His business career started with his family’s clothing manufacturing company in Philadelphia. He came to New York City where he first worked for Colonial Corporation and then moved to L’Oréal USA for the remainder of his career. A devoted, responsible, hardworking employee, he concluded his 25 years there as a Senior Manager in Finance.
Steve’s greatest loves were his family and sports. He coached his sons’ basketball teams for years and made every effort to attend their weekday games after commuting back from New York City. He loved all sports, but his absolute favorite was Penn State football, attending at least one game in Happy Valley each year with his college friends. His ability to recall historical details was hard to match, whether discussing American history or sports. He was thrilled to have been selected a finalist for Sports Jeopardy, though production was ultimately cancelled.
In retirement, Steve volunteered locally for Meals on Wheels, Soft Bones, and the Morris County Historical Society. Most of all, he was proudest of the life he shared with his wife, children, and extended family.
A memorial service for Stephen will be held Sunday, February 19, 2023 at 6:00 PM at Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, 68 Old Short Hills Road, Livingston, NJ 07039. Following the memorial service will be a catered reception from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Bernheim Apter Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, 68 Old Short Hills Road, Livingston, NJ 07039.
