Kathy: During this past year I have thought often of Mitchell. The most prominent thing took place when we were walking in the woods with Frank Alai and some other folks who had dogs. One of the people was a nurse and, looking at my hands she said, "You should go to the emergency room immediately. You've been poisoned. 

I had been very painfully bitten in both cases by spiders in my gardening gloves. I had decided to forget it; it would just go away. But the redness was now up to my elbows and still climbing. Finishing our walk. Mitchell said, "I'll follow you." I told him that wasn't necessary but he insisted. "I don't want you passing out en route to the hospital Those may have been Black Widows." He did follow me all the way to the hospital giving me much peace of mind. It was such a kind thing to do.
They fixed me up in the Emergency Room and the infection subsided but I always had new and special feelings about Mitchell  after that.

Thinking of you and the family today. Not sure if you knew Marc’s brother passed away this past week.

Mitchell was a kind and supportive person. Once, whenI was sick he
followed me to the hospital in his car to make sure I got there. He
was very caring and he is missed as one of people who absolutely made our neighborhood in Morristown.l


I think it was 1982 when my late husband, Don, introduced Mitch to me as a new employee in the firm where he worked and said that Mitch and Cathy and family needed to buy a home in Morristown since the commute from N.Y. would be too much.  I was delighted and shocked when Mitch and Cathy fell in love with Dr. Grants home on Miller Rd. I knew it was a daunting renovation project since it was a vintage Victorian with many original features in tact but had not been updated in years.  Vintage furnace, wiring, pocket doors, wallpaper, butlers pantry, original baths and kitchen!  I didn't believe that a lawyer could take this project on himself, telling me HE could do the work!  But he did all the work over the years to make it a showplace! (along with Cathy's help.)  This man had such a n unbelievable work ethic.  He put in long days at the office and then would work on the house nights and weekends for many many years.  I had no idea that a lawyer could ever be so handy and skilled in many trades!  From stripping wallpaper to refinishing wood to even converting the Carriage House to a real home!  The best part was that he was always glad to share his expertise and knowledge .  Both the neighborhood and the Kellogg Club were so lucky to have Mitch around.  We all miss you!

Sorry that I was late to find out about this.   Sorry to hear of Mitch's passing.  He was very helpful to my family and me with questions of law and also when I was starting out my career in law.   He was a great guy and will be missed. 

While I never met Michell I found in 2019 links to my biological family.  I was born Michael Paul Cobert in Manhattan in Dec 1977.  Born to Ira Morris Cobert and Theresa Presti Cobert.  I was put up for adoption at 3. I talk to my bio father Ira often to learn about the family.  Sad I never got to say hello to Mitchell.  My condolences to the Cobert family.  

Dears Kathryn and family.....Bob and I have such good memories of going to soccer games with the kids.....you both were always such nice people and we always enjoyed our times together.  Later on in years I would see Mitch at my place of business.  He was working on a matter with Andrew Anselmi and I would get the chance to see him....Kathryn.....my heart is with you.    

I was one of Mitch's many partners at Schenck Price. Mitch was a gentle man who cared about everyone. He was sincere and hard-working. He adored his family and loved his home on Miller Road, even more than he loved his old Mercedes station wagon. My guess is that Mitch had renovation plans for his home for the next 20 years. While when we came to know Mitch he was most certainly an outsider in terms of Morristown, it is one of life's great stories as to how he became such a cherished part of the Morristown "scene" over the years. Wendy and I were fortunate to move to 71 Miller Road tow doors down from the Coberts.  Our youngest son, Kevin, is not shy at all.  Just a day or two after moving in Kevin chose to walk over to the Cobert's and introduce himself.  When Mitch opened the door, Kevin introduced himself "Hi, I'm Kevin, what are you having for breakfast?"  Mitch didn't miss a step, he replied "Come on in!"  Wendy and I went looking for him and found him, sitting at the kitchen table with all the Coberts as if he had done this many times before.  That was Kevin's first visit.  It was not his last!  


I would to tell some amusing stories of my time with Mitch. The first thing I recall is our intro in our home in S.Philly,Mitch & I became fast friends, then over the years we grew to best friends. Since then I consider us as Brothers.  Another joyful time, was when I showed Mitch, my stringband clubhouse, he was very interested in how the backpieces were built &  assembled by hand. The times we joked about our favorite §port teams, the Giants & Eagles. Another memory, I enjoyed with him was his health breakfast of, chocolate cake & milk. I should finish this because, I could go on forever about how I feel. I will never forget my adopted Brother, Mitch.   REST IN PEICE.  LOVE YOU FOREVER. John

I have known Mitchell for about 2 years as he & I represented the same parties in a securities case. The unusual part of our joint representation is that we never met in person, only by phone. This case was one whose facts i will never forget nor will i ever forget Mitchell as we talked often and became friends as we frequently talked about our families, travel plans and the like. The case required a lot of strategy sessions so i really got to know him well. That case was finally winding down and recently ended with a win for our clients but he called me this summer on a Saturday and his call required it be by facetime which is when i saw him for the first time. There he was, in a hospital gown in the hospital. he asked me to help him with a new case which i did for as long as he was well enough to work on it.  I could tell there were times when he was very tired but he was as pleasant and as engaging as he had always been.  Even when it was obvious his prognosis was not good, he never pitied himself or bemoaned his fate. he was Mitchell right up to the end. I will miss him.  My deepest sympathies and prayers to his family.

My deepest condolences to all who had the honor of knowing and experiencing this incredible gentleman.
May Kathi and family know he will always be with them in that very special "Mitchell" spirit.
Kathi and Mitch welcomed me as a neighbor almost thirty years ago.  They made me feel at ease in their home and the neighborhood.
My fondest memory is the "zip line" Mitch made in the backyard.  Fun for kids of all ages, included myself.

If you were one of the Family Circle cousins, Mitchell greeted you with an exuberant hug and a smile -- no matter how long it had been since he'd seen you. Family was everything to him, and he was at the  heart of it for us all.

Dear Cobert Family,
I met Mitchell around 1984, We shared coaching of youth sports together and a love of family. Around 1993, Mitchel and I, while sitting at the Kellogg Club pool, discussed starting a weekly" religious "meeting. We chose Wednesday nights. The first year we had a few members and in time the number grew. We discussed such topics as Kings and Queens. On some evenings when the attendance was limited due to weather, Mitchell and I would discuss mathematical equations, such as eight ball in the corner pocket.
These Wednesday meetings were a release for the pressures that all of us faced weekly.
Mitchell always had a smile and positive encouragement.
The twenty plus years that we met at the Kellogg Club will always be cherished by me for the time that I spent with my friend.
Mitchell drank Gentleman Jack and lived as such.

We are stunned and saddened to learn of Mitch's passing.  From our time together at Schenck Price Smith & King thirty plus years ago, to our hosting a "meet the candidate" at our home just last year, we feel qualified to say that Mitch was a wonderful attorney, friend, and of course husband and father. Mitchell handled legal issues for my firm and me personally. He was a unique individual and the most practical lawyer I ever had the privilege  to know and work with. He just made you feel better after every meeting regardless of outcomes. Most importantly he was a really warm and decent man.

Two memories of Mitchell come to mind. Most vivid is how his eyes lit up with love every time he looked at Lauren. But also, how much he savored life’s small pleasures, like returning from a walk with bags of fresh candy and nuts from Reading Terminal Market. You could sense his joy and appreciation of all things.  Our sincere condolences to the entire family.


Mitch and my dad became close friends when they were young kids growing up in Brooklyn, and they remained close friends for many, many years since then. I’ve always been impressed at how a friendship could last so long, but whenever I was around Mitch it was no surprise at how this was possible. Warm, kind, caring, funny, and fun to be around, Mitch is the kind of friend we all would be lucky to have in our lives. 

To Kathi, Jessica, Lauren, Max, and the whole family, my sympathies go out to you and may Mitch’s memory be a blessing throughout all of our lives.  


Mitch was the epitome of special. To be fortunate enough to know him was to love him. He always had a ready, engaging smile for everyone. And his love for Kathi and his children was readily apparent. Mitch had the most wonderful sense of humor and he shared that side of himself with all who crossed his path. The world is a bit dimmer without Mitch, but he continues to illuminate our lives as we remember all the special things he did to make life better and fuller for others. A life well lived!

I met Mitchell about 43 years ago when I became engaged to his cousin Allan.  He was one part of a large, closely knit clan of grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and kids.  Over the years, I got to know him as a very special part of that family. I have always thought of him as a truly unique man; caring and concerned about everyone in his family, and the world at large as well. I know my mother-in-law, his Aunt Esther, thought of him as a  son.  He leaves a wonderful legacy, and wonderful memories, for his family, friends and associates to treasure. My heartfelt condolences to Kathi and family.

We will always remember Uncle Mitch as a person who was caring ,friendly, and always willing to help in any way. Uncle Mitch and Aunt Kathi made sure to visit my Mom and my brother and sisters and me during Christmas. He was always ready to come down and work his remodeling magic at our Mom's house. We were always touched by how he always make sure that our Mom was OK. We will miss his caring words and advice and we will miss his great sense of humor. We love you and miss you and remember you always

Mitchell Cobert was my cousin but was like a brother to me.  He was always there when I needed support or just to talk.  As a child we played often either at our grandparents house, Liberty house, my parents house or in the Smallwood house. As we matured we kept together and shared wonderful family events.  Major milestones such as marriages, births of children, their accomplishments and sadly the passing of the matriarchs of our family.  Mitchell and Kathi were a major part of assisting in the care of my mother near the end of her life.  Mitchell's advice was always helpful and thoughtful.  He was a great human being and a humble person.   May his n'shama still shine upon us and may we learn from his example of helping others. 

I have such wonderful memories of sharing the sidelines with Mitch and Kathi on many long, cold Sundays of Max and Chase's soccer games.  I could always count on Mitch to have a smile on his face and keep us all laughing on the sidelines.  He was always such a kind person.  

Our deepest sympathies to Kathi and the entire Cobert family.  Max  has been part of our family for many years and we are thinking of you and Emily and Jack.  Sending strength, love and prayers.

I remember our family circle meetings where all the cousins were relegated to the kitchen for dinner, while our parent feasted together in the rest of the house.  And I remember when the cousins had to debate the pros and cons of the candidates in the upcoming election.

Mitchell was a greater debater even at that early an age.



We are sorry for your loss.  After listening to the moving stories of Mitchell's  life - how he had such strong character, love for others, and care for all those around him - we miss not appreciating the times when we had the opportunity to meet and interact with him and Cathy.  Jessica is a close friend of ours and we know that Mitchell's memory will live strongly through the daughter who is so  warm and caring and helpful to others.  Clearly those wonderful qualities he possessed, he helped instill in his children, and the world is so much better for that.

We too remember Mitch as a caring person who was genuinely interested in other people.  Louise remembers his interest in discussing school board news and Tom remembers talking with Mitch at Kellogg parties about his family. 

We also remember his infectious smile.  





We knew Mitchell through Jon and his family.  When you visited Mitchell and Kathi at their home,  you didn't have to be there long to feel the sense of family, of humor, of caring.

Mitchell's run for public office was a prime indicator of his commitment to community.  He carried his quiet smile and his competence into the effort; and just like the stories we've heard about his acumen at the poker table, he placed his bet with confidence, and let the chips fall where they may.  In everything he did, Mitchell always had the winning hand.

We send our condolences, prayers, and tears to the family,  The service has been a beautiful tribute.

I first met Mitchell when I returned my law practice to Morristown.  One of my first matters in the new office had him on the other side.  Both clients were Hispanic.  Mitchell had some command of the language.  I had none.  There was a lot if bickering going back and forth and Mitchell and I just wanted to close the deal because the issues were far less than minor.  That matter morphed into lunch at his office followed by sharing his "afternoon constitutional" walk around the neighborhood.  The obligatory tour of the Kellogg Club and an invitation to join.

This was the beginning of a multi decade friendship.  A friend to discuss either legal or personal problems was just a phone call away.

Not hearing from Mitchell was always a sign that something was amiss.  Mitchell shied away from sharing his own trials and tribulations but was always ready to help me with mine.

We had competitive illnesses.  He's have one and I'd have one worse.  Then he would rally and get sick again and we would laugh and laugh.  Then at the outset of Superstorm Sandy I ended up in a Philadelphia hospital for more than a week.  I returned to a powerless Morristown a weak and downtrodden condition.  No power.  Mitch JUST HAPPENED to call.  His family had power and Susan and I lived there for four nights until power was restored.

We spoke.  We shared.  We loved.  I served as campaign manager when he ran for Congress.

I miss him already.  I will continue to miss him for the rest of my life.

We were neighbors for 16 years. Our children played together. We shared many  neighborhood events at the Kellogg Club. In all of those years and the many since, we always knew  Mitchell as a decent, good man; a man in whom all could depend. And with great integrity.   May his memory be a blessing for all who knew him and, through him, his children and grandchildren.

Mitchell and i met at CCNY when i joined Phi Sigma Delta.  We became friends immediately and stayed close throughout the years.
We shared many experiences together.
As my first marriage didn't work out, Mitchell and Kathi took me in.
They lived in Yonkers and Jessica was a baby. They treated me like family.  In fact, Milton (Mitch's father) handled my divorce.  I will never forget them for this act of kindness.
In fact, when Mitchel was living in his small apartment in the village, i would often crash on his floor when things got rough at home.
I recall schlepping down furniture from their UWS walk-up when they moved out of the city.  There was nothing i wouldn't do for Mitchell and Kathi.
Although Mitchell lived in Morristown and i on the UWS, we saw each other whenever we could and spoke on the phone very often.  I recall he was working on a Securities fraud case and needed to learn about IT Security as part of the case.  With me being in the IT business, we had several tutorials and i believe he won the case.
Mitchell has left behind the most wonderful family and close friends, which speaks volumes to his kindness, wisdom and willingness to always help others.

Those who have shown kindness, given joy and made us laugh have given us the lasting gift of wonderful memories. And Mitch did just that.     He and Kathi welcomed us into the Morristown neighborhood when we first arrived 40 years ago, and we immediately felt at home.    Throughout the years Mitch was always there to offer a helping hand and share his time and wisdom—  whether it was giving our son Mike a ride to a soccer game – or sharing insights with our nephew who was just starting out on his legal career – and doing the same for our son Mike when he graduated from law school a few years later -  he showed his generosity of heart.
Mitch was also very active in the community. He was a founding member of the Morristown Partnership Special improvement District, created in 1994 to revitalize the downtown business district.  He remained a legal resource in the early years for the non profit organization.

 He will be fondly remembered by the Tighe family for being a wonderful friend and neighbor. Our deepest sympathies to Kathi, and to all of the Corbet family. 


Mitchell was one of our biggest fans of our Hardware Stores.  
Always excited, always curious, always there to offer advice, and to lend a hand.  (Literally.  He would come to our events if he was in town, we would give him a red vest, and put him to work.  He couldn't be prouder to help customers, and tell people who he was.)
As my brother's Father-in-Law, it was such pleasant surprise that he was so happy to see us whenever our paths crossed.
His smiling face,  and genuine interest in how we were all doing, did not go unnoticed.
He will be sincerely missed.

Mitch also represented a number of my family and friends. He was a very kind and thoughtful person and went out of his way to help others. I am so grateful that I met Mitch and his secretary Beth years ago. He was a first class attorney, but more importantly a dedicated family man. May his spirit stay with you always. God Bless

In all the best ways we took our friendship with Mitchell for granted…having  a chat whenever we met, whether on the way  to Temple B’nai Or, in a passing interruption when he was mowing his lawn where we could lament our mutual difficulties in creating a thriving carpet of grass, at any of the innumerable Kellogg Club social events over 25+ years, or in the early years cheering on Lauren and Max (sorry, we missed the Jessica years!) and the other kids at swim team meets, to name but a few. In any setting he was always the same, genuinely interested and concerned for us and our family, offering the benefit of his own insights and experiences earned by being a bit ahead of us in the parenting game. He knew what it meant to be part of a community, both in the micro (family and neighborhood) sense as well as the larger sense, as when he made a run for Congress with the intent of bringing that same spirit of cooperation and common good to our national government. We count ourselves lucky to have been his friends, and know his memory will be a blessing to his family. עליו השלום

Maybe in all lives there are just a few people who stand out from all the rest. It’s easy to call their faces to mind, remember the way they laughed, or the way they made us feel. Maybe once or twice they paused their own lives to advise us, or were a rare, clear example of goodness, or had a way of making us laugh with quips astute and completely out of the blue. And maybe we hoped that we could some day be half as generous or kind. For me, Mitchell was one of those people, and all of this. He will always be an inspiration. May his memory be a blessing and consolation for Kathi and the truly wonderful Cobert kids.

Ditmas Junior High School was the first Brooklyn school I attended, having just moved after sixth grade from Manhattan. Our SP class has always held a special place in my heart, and Mitchell was one of my classmates who helped make the memories. It was always my hope that our class would have a  Ditmas ‘61 reunion, but unfortunately it never happened. Mitchell left us way too early, but he will always be remembered as being part of the class that welcomed me to Brooklyn. Keep smiling Mitch and rest in peace.

Remembering when I first met Mitch and Kathi in 1981 when Mitch accepted a job that my husband, Don, was involved with to do “Blue Sky” work.  I had no idea what that was but knew that they needed to move to Morristown.  I took them to a house on 61 Miller Rd. That was owned by Dr. Grant and his wife.  The home had beautiful bones and original architectural details but was in need of total updating and renovations.  I don’t think there was a square inch that wasn’t covered in wallpapers from the 1930s and I don’t believe it had a kitchen on the first floor.   It had a Butler’s Pantry.
I was amazed listening to Mitch announce that he could do everything the the house needed himself! It is rare that a lawyer could be that skilled.   It was a miracle to see over the years how he transformed that beautiful home for his family with Cathi by his side.  He soon became the guru for others in the neighborhood to learn the easy way to remove wallpaper, unstick pocket doors, refinish woodwork ,restore fixtures......He was incredible!
I soon after recruited him for the Kellogg Club knowing  that they needed a “Mitch Cobert” desperately in those days to save the Club.  How he managed to work long hours at the office and then do all of his projects in the house and then  Help the club is beyond me.  
Mitch was a gift to his family, his neighborhood and his friends.  His good works and deeds will live on forever .  Cathi, Max, Lauren and Jessica, we share your sadness yet are so grateful to have had Mitch in our lives!


I met Mitchell in 1966 when Jon and I first became friends.  I can only remember him as always being an up, friendly, funny kind of guy with that great Cobert sense of humor.  Laurie and I send our deepest condolences to Kathi and the family.  May his memory be a blessing. 

We are forever grateful to have known Mitch.  Kathi and Mitchell raised wonderful children and were sincerely  gracious.  We were so fortunate to benefit from all of their efforts when our son married Jessica.   We will  lovingly remember Mitch who was truly "one of the good guys"

Mitch, your three amazing children will now be you in the world. 

I was invited to go walking with Mitchell and other folks in town, including Frank Alai. Everyone was to bring their dog. i don't remember whether Mitchell had a dog but he was along for the hike in Lewis Morris Park. Earlier that day I had been bitten on both thumbs by something when I put on gloves to garden. Now in the park my hands and arms were bright red and getting redder. and enormous. Mitchell kept worrying about me. "I don't like the way that looks," he said.  "Your hands look like catcher's mitt.s'  When we finished the hike and returned to our cars, Mitchell insisted on following me home. I was really glad for the support and really rather afraid that whatever it was was creeping up my body. Mitchell insisted  we go to the hospital. In the Emergency Room a doctor finally saw me. ":Probablyi spiders ,'he said. 'Got any antihistamines at home?" he asked. "Sure," I said. "Take 'em" was all he said. I did and by the next morning my body had returned to normal. But I shall never forget Mitchell's kindness and the way he looked after me. He was really there for me.

My condolences to the family.  I've known Mitchell my entire life, i.e., since 1947.  In recent years, I especially appreciated Kathi & Mitchell hosting our family get togethers for years.

Many years ago, I was walking through the main courthouse in Los Angeles, and spotted a familiar face, but could not place the name.  The other party stared at me as well; we were both out of our normal context.   I would easily recognize Mitchell in Brooklyn or in Morristown, but downtown Los Angeles was just not making sense.  As I went up to him, our minds kicked in and identified the other, and you could see two light bulbs light up at the same time.

May Mitchell's memory be a blessing for his family.


I grew up down the street from the Cobert family in Morristown and spent much of my childhood in their home. I will always remember Mr. Cobert so fondly. He was always happy (and making those of us around him happy) and I was always amazed by how hard he worked on things for his family. He was such a wonderful man, I know he will be dearly missed by so many.

Mitchell and I were kindergarten classmates in Brooklyn and fraternity brothers in college.  Mitchell was always the voice of reason. I will miss him every day. 

I became acquainted with Mitchell via the Kellogg Club and I thoroughly enjoyed his company as a member of our poker group. Mitchell and I also enjoyed our common experience in the securities industry. He was a very bright man with a wonderful sense of humor.
Mitchell was also a true gentleman, and I will remember his kindness, his respect for others and even his bravery during the last many months of illness during which his smile and optimism were undefeated. Cathy and the family have my sincere condolences...may your hearts be lifted by Mitchell's kind spirit and the knowledge that he will rest in peace.

With a lump in my throat...I recall. We were neighbors on Miller Road. I have such a vivid picture in my mind of the moment I met Mitchell.  I knocked on their door and heard, "Come in."  As I entered their grand hallway I was greeted by a man in jeans and a tee shirt...high on a ladder...spackling/patching a hole in the ceiling of the late 1800's home. I asked if Mr. Cobert was there and, to laughter...he said, "I am Mr. Cobert."
  Mitchell loved to laugh, and over the years there was plenty. Even as I learned that afternoon he was an attorney, I recall thinking, "Wow...an attorney who can spackle. That's cool."  Mitchell was such a close friend and confidant. There's a hole in my heart for this wonderful family.  Our kids went to school together as well.  Mitch and Kathi were people who built the word neighborhood around neighbor.  We love you Mitchell.

My deepest sympathy to you and your family during this time.  I have great memories of Mitch from a long time ago from working with him at the Broker Dealer with my Dad.  He was always nice and good for some laughs.  He was a great friend to my Dad and he will be missed.    

Mitchell and I were "roommates" in the NY AG's office in the World Trade Center.  Every day there was a chance to exchange our experiences; and to do our respective renditions of "I'm a wild and crazy guy."  Mitchell certainly wasn't wild and crazy, but good natured, sincere and always doing everything within reason to do well by his family and friends.  Over the years I returned to NY for visits and Mitchell never missed our informal AG "alumni" get together dinners.  He made us all so proud when he ran in the Democratic primary for Congress.  He will be missed by me and I expect by everyone who knew him.

My sincere condolences to his wife and other family members.

No one had a bigger heart and a sharper mind. I was honored to have worked with him for so many years on New Jersey Lawyer magazine and to call him a friend.
