Family and friends are invited to attend a funeral service on Monday, June 20, 2016, at 11 a.m. at Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, 68 Old Short Hills Rd, Livingston, N.J., to be followed by interment at Sharey Tefilo Cemetery, 432 Orange Road, Montclair, N.J.
Dr. Olinger was born in 1918 in Bloomfield, N.J. to Jennie and Nathaniel Olinger. He graduated Phi Betta Kappa from Cornell University, where he also excelled in track and field and was most proud of his accomplishments in pole vaulting. He then graduated from Cornell University’s medical school where he was elected to the honor medical society, Alpha Omega Alpha. While interning at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, he was called to serve in World War II as a captain in the Army, stationed in Europe, from January 1944 to July 1946. After the war, he completed his residency at Mount Sinai Hospital in Pathology and Bacteriology and completed further training at Bellevue Hospital in New York City. He returned to New Jersey where he worked at Essex County Sanatorium as a pulmonary specialist before practicing as an internist for 54 years in Verona, N.J. in private practice and for 25 years at Green Hill Memorial Home. Dr. Olinger was also appointed as a Clinical Associate Professor at the College of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. During 1952 to 2001, Dr. Olinger served in various roles at Mountainside Hospital, in Montclair, N.J., as Medical Department Director, Member of the Medical Board, Chairman of the Medical Library Committee, and Champion of Graduate Medical Education in Internal Medicine.
Dr. Olinger touched many people’s lives and was greatly admired for his compassionate care and dedication to his patients and his love of learning. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and will be dearly missed. Dr. Olinger was an avid golfer and longtime member of Mountain Ridge Country Club, where he won many tournaments.
Dr. Olinger is survived by his wife of 74 years, Renee Olinger (nee Egelka), originally of Bronx, NY, son, Kenneth Olinger of Dublin, Ireland (wife, Catherine O’Brien-Olinger); daughters, Susan Olinger of Reston, VA (husband, Daniel Kole), and Lois Olinger of Acton, MA (husband, William Stewart); grandchildren, Sam, Brian, Benjamin, Peter, Joshua, and Jenna, and one great grandchild, Fiachra. Dr. Olinger’s sister, Carolyn Eisenberg, passed away in 2001.
