Leonard Macheska, 90, of Nutley, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, with his loving family by his side. Born in Taylor, PA, Leonard resided in Nutley since 1966. He was proud veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in Germany, and was honorably discharged as a Corporal. After his enlistment, he became a Licensed Funeral Director in 1957 and worked at various funeral homes throughout Essex, Hudson, and Union County, including Manger Funeral Home, Nutley; Van Tassel Funeral Home, Nutley; Leber Funeral Home, Union City; Volk Funeral Home, Teaneck; Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home, Livingston; and Menorah Funeral Home, Union. He was also a member of St. John’s Lodge 1-FMA for the past 60 years, and a member of St. Paul’s Congregational Church, Nutley for the past 60 years.
Leonard was predeceased by his beloved wife, Dorothy M. Macheska, as well as his brothers, Walter, Peter, and William. He is survived by his loving children, Janine DeFeo, Leonard Macheska, Jr. (Mary), and Gregory A. Macheska. He also leaves his adoring grandchildren Lauren Marks (Benjamin), Nicole Macheska (Wesley Looney), Michele Nelson (Eric), and Marc, Jr., and his cherished great-grandchildren, Logan, Wyatt, Teagan, Jaxson, and Lachlen. Leonard is also survived by his companion, Janet Strachan.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 25, from 2-6 pm, at Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home, Livingston. A funeral service will be held on Monday, February 26, at 11 am at St. Paul’s Congregational Church, Nutley. Everyone is asked to meet directly at church on Monday.
