HOMEGOING SERVICE
JOANNE GANTT
SUNRISE: OCTOBER 10, 1939
SUNSET: NOVEMBER 04, 2011
Joanne Gantt was born on October 10, 1939 in Barnwell, South Carolina to the late Mr. Harold Gantt and the late Mrs. Gertrude (Johnson) Gantt. Born from this union were five children: the late Mr. Robert Lee Gantt, the late Mr. Roosevelt Gantt, the late Mrs. Mary Ellen Gantt-Fuller, the late Joanne Gantt, and the late Mr. Harold Gantt.
The Gantt Family relocated from Barnwell, South Carolina to Jersey City, New Jersey when she was 2 years of age. She received both her primary and secondary education in the Jersey City public school system. She graduated grammar school from PS # 14 and high school from Henry Synder High School. She also attended Jersey City State College in pursuit of an undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Education. However, she later changed the focus of her educational interests and goals to computers and finance. She attended Bank Street Business College in New York in order to accomplish this goal. Joanne finally retired at the age of 64 in 2004 from Mikasa located in Secaucus, New Jersey. She was a very hardworking and dedicated employee who was well liked and respected by her colleagues and supervisors.
Joanne had a very fun and easy going spirit. She was very family oriented (a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend). However, the role she most enjoyed in life was being a mother. On June 27, 1967, she gave birth to her only child (Robyn Kia Gantt). At this point, she devoted her life to nurturing her daughter and ensuring that Robyn would have only the best that life could offer. She was a single mother who worked tirelessly to ensure that her only child would achieve all her lifelong dreams and goals. Joanne proudly watched her daughter as she graduated from high school, college, medical school and later receive a Master's in Public Health. On December 19, 2003, Joanne was overcome with both pride and joy as she watched her only grandchild (Jordan Amir Moody) enter this world. From that day forth, she dedicated the rest of her life to loving and nurturing Amir. These two became inseparable until the day she departed this earth.
Joanne embraced life with the utmost enthusiasm. She lived life on her own terms; never afraid to take on a challenge and always standing firm in her beliefs and convictions. Because her approach to life often involved "taking the bull by the horns", her shoulders bared many heavy burdens while she was on this earth. But, somehow she always made it through with a smile on her face. In addition, she also managed to be there for others with a kind word, a listening ear, support, or love whenever it was needed. At last, all her troubles and struggles have finally ended as she is now at peace and home with the Lord.
Joanne will be missed by many and forever loved. She leaves behind to cherish her memory: daughter, Robyn Kia Gantt, MD, MPH, grandson, Jordan Amir Moody, sister-in-law: Carla Gantt, nephews: Jimmie Lee Fuller, Luther Manuel, Roosevelt Caleb Gantt, David Gantt, and Stephen Gantt, nieces: Stephanie Fuller-Rogers, Betty Martin-Fuller, Gertrude Fuller-Manuel, Haroldine Gantt, Alicia Gantt-Bolder, and Demetric Johnson-Gantt, a host of grand nephews and nieces, great-grand nephews and nieces, great-great-grand nephews and nieces, cousins, and friends.
Joanne Gantt was cremated on Sunday, November 6, 2011 at 11:00 am at the Garden State Crematory located at 4101 Kennedy Boulevard, North Bergen, New Jersey 07047. This was a private service attended by only myself and my son per her wishes.
Once again, my son and I wish to thank everyone for all the kind words, sympathy, and prayers during this extremely difficult time.
