A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday, November 26, 2018 at 11a.m. in St. Aloysius Church in Caldwell, followed by the Entombment in St. Stephen’s Cemetery in Millburn.
Born in Manhattan, Frank grew up in the Bronx. He moved to New Jersey in 1986, living in Englewood and Roseland before moving to Myrtle Beach, S.C. in 2016.
His career in education spanned 34 years in the Bronx with the New York City Board of Education, initially as a middle school history teacher and then as an assistant principal. He graduated from Iona College and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history, and later returned to school, attending Fordham University, where he received a Master of Arts degree in Educational Leadership. He enjoyed sharing his curiosity for learning and the importance of higher education with his students.
Frank was a regular visitor of the Roseland Public Library, where he was known as passionate bibliophile. He especially liked books on World War II history, as well as biographies. At home, his devoted companion Beckett, an English bulldog who passed away a few years ago, could always be found at Frank’s side. Frank was exceptionally generous to organizations that needed support and contributed regularly to his parochial grammar school, which instilled in him a deep reverence and respect for his Catholic faith.
He was predeceased by his parents Frances (nee Adelaide) and Lucien Stavola, as well as his adored granddaughter Jordan Calabrese.
He was the beloved husband of Joann (nee Valvano) Stavola, father of David Stavola and his wife Joann, and daughter Nancy Callaci; stepfather of Michael Calabrese and his wife Eileen, Donald Calabrese, and Joell (Calabrese) Federico; grandfather of Ashley, Isabel, Emily, Hanna, Jake, Lauren, Jason, Olivia, and Jessica; and former father-in-law of Peter Federico, Kim Silva-Martinez, and Grace Barling Leep.
Contributions may be made in Frank’s name to St. Joseph’s Indian School, PO Box 326, Chamberlain, South Dakota 57326.
