Francis Richard Young died peacefully on January 12, 2024, the day after his 96th birthday. He is survived by his 4 sons, Richard (Mary), Matthew (Christine), James (Debra) and John (Karolyn), 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Richard was an inventor and electrical engineer. He invented the wave soldering machine which automated the assembly of electronic circuit boards. He also invented solid state timers for traffic lights amongst other things. Richard was a Lieutenant Junior Grade in the US Navy. He served in the Atlantic Fleet during the Korean War on the USS Goodrich and USS Coral Sea as a Radio Engineer. He was also stationed at the Brooklyn Navy yard researching construction materials.
He is fondly remembered as a gentle, quiet father to his 4 boys. He was dedicated to his wife Helena, who predeceased him in 2004. A devout Catholic, he was a member of St. Margaret’s of Scotland Parish in Morristown, NJ.
A visitation for Richard will be held Thursday, January 18, 2024 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Quinn Hopping Funeral Home, 145 East Mount Pleasant Ave, Livingston, NJ 07039. An entombment will occur Friday, January 19, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM at Holy Rood Cemetery, 61 Whippany Road, Morristown, NJ 07960. A funeral mass will occur Friday, January 19, 2024 from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at St. Philomena Church, 386 S. Livingston Avenue, Livingston, NJ 07039.
