Florence Audrey Schatten, 80, died on Monday, October 19, 2020, surrounded by her loved ones and extended family. Florence was born on May 22, 1940, and grew up in Patterson and Clifton, New Jersey. She graduated in 1957 from Clifton High School and upon graduation, attended Tufts University and later pursued her masters in business from New York University.
Upon graduation, she lived for some time in New York, and leveraging her business expertise and passion for fashion, she developed and implemented leading-edge retail training programs for Brooklyn-based Abraham & Strauss. She then moved with her husband, Arthur, to New Brunswick, New Jersey, and then to Short Hills, where she dedicated herself to her 30-year career as a high school guidance counselor at Morris Knolls High School in Denville. While a counselor, Florence taught college counseling courses and pursued her masters in marriage and family counseling, and after retiring from Morris Knolls, she continued to help others in private practice as a licensed marriage and family therapist. During this time, she also served as an appointee in Governor Christie Todd Whitman’s administration as a Member of the State Board of Marriage and Family Therapy Examiners.
Florence was also active at Temple B'nai Abraham in Livingston. She was an avid golfer and loved her time with Arthur and her friends and family at the Maplewood Country Club, her home away from home. Florence was fiercely loyal and had a thoughtful, kind and generous heart. She adored spending time with family and friends.
Florence is survived by her loving children, Billy, his son Rafael, and his wife, Deborah, and their children, Henry, Aaryn and Grace, and Alexis Klemish and her husband, Paul. She is also survived by her brother Harold, and his wife, Ina, their three children and their families, and her sister-in-law, Barbara, her husband, Ben, their four children and their families, as well her extended family across the US, UK and in Israel and her loving caretakers.
