Debbie Hopp, devoted mother, talented computer scientist, and passionate traveler, passed away peacefully at the age of 87. Known for her intelligence, thoughtfulness, and unwavering dedication to her family, friends and community, Debbie’s life was marked by many memorable accomplishments.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, to Russian-Jewish immigrants, Debbie moved to Los Angeles as a teenager, where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa from UCLA with a degree in Mathematics. In the mid-1950s, she became one of the few women in the emerging field of computer science, working on some of the earliest programmable computers, including the JOHNNIAC at the RAND Corporation. She later spent 26 years as a software engineer in the aerospace industry at TRW, managing classified projects and inspiring students through her work with the LAUSD Science Fairs.
Outside of her career, Debbie was a passionate world traveler, exploring Europe, Asia, Australia, and beyond, always collecting art and learning about the world. Her curiosity was matched by her commitment to making the world a better place. She volunteered for organizations such as the League of Women Voters and the Chicano-Jewish Women’s Alliance and remained active in her community throughout her life.
Debbie was a devoted mother to her three daughters, raising them with warmth and wisdom. She was always a pillar of strength and support for her family, and her love and guidance will be dearly missed.
Debbie is survived by her daughter, Melissa Hames (Scott) of Short Hills, NJ, and grandchildren Sabrina and Julia. She was preceded in death by her daughters Stephanie (b. 1963 – d. 1989) and Julie (b. 1961 – d. 1998).
Her family and many friends will always remember her for her kindness, generosity, and strength of spirit.
