Bernard Sobel, 93, was born in Newark, New Jersey on September 1, 1928 to Harry and Sarah (nee Lapinsky) Sobel. He passed away at peace at his home in Boynton Beach, Florida on Sunday, January 23, 2022 with his children by his side.
Bernie was a proud 1945 graduate of Weequahic High School in Newark; received his Bachelor of Science in Accounting from New York University in 1948; and attended Rutgers Law School. He was a member of the Air National Guard of New Jersey and was stationed in Albany, Georgia during the Korean Conflict.
It was while in Albany, Georgia that Bernie met his wife Janet Sobel (nee Marks). They were married in 1953. After initially returning to Newark, they settled in Livingston where they raised their family and remained for over fifty years.
Throughout his adult life, Bernie enjoyed a meaningful and successful career as a Certified Public Accountant. In 1956 he started his own firm that evolved into Sobel & Co., where he served as Managing Partner for forty years before officially retiring in 1998. He was a true professional, devoted to helping entrepreneurs succeed in their businesses. As such, he was very proud of the trusted advisor relationships he nurtured and maintained with his clientele.
Bernie was equally proud of his commitment to community service and philanthropy. He was a Mason and Shriner and was dedicated to the Lions Club for many years, serving as Governor of District 16E. He was President of the Jewish Education Association of MetroWest from 1972 to 1975 and also participated on many committees and held various leadership positions with the United Jewish Appeal of Greater MetroWest NJ, including serving as the General Campaign Chairman from 1981 to 1982. Bernie was also a volunteer for the CPA profession where he was an active member of the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants, having held many key roles, including President of the Essex Chapter and Vice- President of the statewide organization.
After his retirement and move to Florida, Bernie dedicated his time to serving his local community of Hunters Run right up to the time of his passing. It became a mini-career for him, one where he held numerous positions including an officer of the Board of Directors, President of his local community of Southport and President of the Community Maintenance Organization.
Bernie is predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Janet Sobel and his son Harold Sobel. He is survived by his loving children- daughter Dorothea and son-in-law Victor Libman; his son Alan Sobel and daughter-in-law Dana; his daughter-in- law Bobbie Sobel; his grandchildren-Rachel Madris (and husband Jared); Craig Libman; Emily Grise (and husband Brian); Jamie Sobel; Sarah Sobel Rebecca Sobel his great-grandchildren- Madison, Regan, Taylor and Sofia, and his loving companion of the last nine years, Lila Glassman.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Thursday, January 27th at the Bernheim Apter Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston, NJ. You may also attend services virtually using the Livestream link below.
The burial will be private.
