

Bernard Rothenberg, known to all as Bernie, was born in Queens, NY, he grew up in Queens and Kearny NJ. Bernie served in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956. Following his time in the Service, he attended Fairleigh Dickenson University, obtaining a BA and a Master's Degree. He went on to a very successful 40-year career as a Certified Public Accountant and an Adjunct Professor of Graduate Accounting at Rutgers University.
Throughout his life, Bernie had a passion for public service. He was a Life Member, and past president, of the West Orange chapter of the Lions Club. He was also past president of the West Orange Chamber of Commerce, as well as a member of the Board of Directors of the Thomas Edison National Historical Park and Accountants for the Public Interest. In the 1970's, he served as the volunteer Treasurer of the Newark NAACP. He also served as a member of the West Orange Police Department Auxiliary and the Ocean County (NJ) Office of Emergency Management.
Bernie was extremely active in organizations advocating for fellow Disabled Veterans. He was a charter member of the Atomic Veterans. He was also a member of the American Legion, the Disabled American Veterans and the Jewish War Veterans. Bernie and his beloved wife Arlene were married 47 years. They enjoyed playing tennis and traveling the world together.
Bernie was a devoted Jew and a committed Zionist. He was predeceased by Arlene and his parents, Samuel and Lee. He is survived by his daughter Lisa, her husband David and their son, his grandson, Dylan, and his son, Arnold and his partner Paula. He is also survived by his longtime companion Roz Silverman, and brothers Howard and his wife Barbara, and David and his wife Joan, and nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted on Monday, October 14. He will be laid to rest next to his wife, Arlene, at Cedar Park and Beth El Cemetery, 735 Forest Ave, Paramus NJ. Mourners are asked to gather at the main building at 10:30 AM. Burial will be at 11:00.
Friends and family are encouraged to make a donation, in lieu of flowers, in his name to the Valley Hospital Hospice or the University of Pennsylvania Hospital Hematological Oncology Department.
