Patrick William O’Malley, Sr. died Saturday, July 29, 2017 after a short illness. Pat was born March 1, 1931 in Springfield, Missouri to Bernard W. “Brog” O’Malley and Freda Wilson O’Malley. He moved to Little Rock in 1941, where he attended East Side Junior High and graduated from Catholic High School in 1949. He attended Ole Miss for two years before transferring to the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity and graduated in 1953. After graduation, Pat went to work at General Motors Acceptance Corporation, where he remained employed for the next 41 years, with another 10 years at Nuvell Financial Services after a brief retirement. In 1956 he married Mona Emmerling O’Malley, beginning a partnership of best friends that would last 54 years until her death in 2011. In the ensuing years their marriage produced four children, 10 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild, with a second due in October. Pat was beloved by many friends and co-workers over the years, but his family was the centerpiece of his life, and he was first and foremost a loved and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He had a life-long passion for cars, as well as the men and women of Arkansas who sold and financed them. He was also afflicted with that particular form of masochism known to Arkansans, Razorback fandom. In later life he became adept at maintaining a high degree of optimism regarding their prospects in spite of all evidence to the contrary. Pat was preceded in death by his wife Mona; parents, Freda and Brog; brother, Bernard Wilson “Barney” O’Malley, and sister, Patricia “Patsy” O’Malley. He is survived by four children: Mary O’Malley Borg (Rody); Kathleen O’Malley Bunder (Peter); Patrick William O’Malley, Jr. (Carolyn), and Michael Bernard O’Malley (Leslie); ten grandchildren: Rebecca, Kellie, and Christina Borg, Molly Bunder, Emily Bunder Gilhooly (Matt), Patrick William III and Elizabeth O’Malley, and Helen, Katie, and Wilson O’Malley; and one great-grandchild, Kadin Borg. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at Christ the King Catholic Church in Little Rock, with interment to follow at the columbarium at Our Lady of the Holy Souls Catholic Church in Little Rock. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Catholic High School Foundation.
