Martel Elaine Dunn, 87, passed away peacefully in Little Rock, Arkansas on September 24, 2023. She was born in El Paso, Texas to her loving parents Martin and Maude Harris. She was a kind and beautiful soul who will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure to know her.
Spending most of her young life in Houston, Texas, Martel was a debutante, champion barrel racer and a member of the DAR. She graduated with an associate's degree and trained as a medical transcriptionist. She met her wonderful husband and love of her life, Larry Dunn, and had three beautiful children together. After a successful career change to Customer Service Management, she eventually owned her own business selling children's books. In her fifties, Martel pursued a lifelong dream of becoming a professional clown. She performed Christian skits at local churches and provided entertainment at promotional gatherings, parades and birthday parties where she specialized in breaking through to Autistic children. She took great pride in pranking Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones in a skit at a televised rally. She enjoyed reading, writing, painting, assorted arts and crafts, puzzles, walking her dog, and action movies.
She was a devoted Christian and a member of Windsong Church of Christ. She taught Sunday school for many years and was active in World Bible School. She supported Partners in Progress, a program that provides safe water in Burma and Cambodia. One of the highlights of her life was visiting Cambodia one summer to teach bible school and perform her Christian clown skits for the locals.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister, and daughter, Darcy Dunn.
She is survived by her son Martin Dunn, daughter Shannon Dunn, grandchildren Tara Erwin, Aaron Dunn, Larry Dunn, Martel Dunn, and great-grandchildren Mason, Karsten, Tristan, Martin, Aria, Della, Martel, and one on the way.
A Celebration of her life will be at 7:00 pm, Friday, October 6, 2023 at Griffin Leggett Healey & Roth Funeral Home. She will be laid to rest next to her husband at Garland Mills Memorial Cemetery in Garland, Texas.
