Alma Heinke Lowrey, 93, of Bryan, Texas passed away on April 26, 2015 in Bryan, Texas. Visitation will be from 1:00-2:00PM on Thursday, April 30 at Griffin Leggett Healy & Roth funeral home in Little Rock, followed by the funeral service at 2:00PM. Interment will be at Rest Hills Cemetery in North Little Rock. Alma grew up on Heinke Road in Mabelvale, Arkansas on a farm that was visited by many people in the 1950s when it was selected as a Pilot Forest for Pulaski County. She earned a Juris Doctor degree from Arkansas Law School and was admitted to the bar in 1947. She met her husband Lester, an owner of Little Rock Abstract Company, in the Pulaski County Courthouse where she was working for the National Farm Loan Association. They were married on August 18, 1947. Alma was Assistant Secretary-Treasurer of the National Farm Loan Association from 1940-1947 and Justice of the Peace for Pulaski County in 1953. She was a loving leader for her daughters’ Girl Scout troops and served on the board of directors of the Ouachita Girl Scout Council for many years. Alma also served on the Arkansas Women’s Civil Defense Council and the Governor’s Commission on Aging in 1959, and was a member of many organizations including the Little Rock Association of Women Lawyers (president 1959), the Woman’s Society of Christian Service (president 1959-1960), National Association of Women Lawyers, Arkansas Association of American Judicature Society, Little Rock Garden Club (served as president), and Little Rock Departmental Club (president for four years.) Alma and her husband Lester enjoyed many years as members of the Friendly Class of First Christian Church of Little Rock. Alma was active in Christian Women’s Fellowship and also served on the board of directors of First Christian Church (served as chairman). Alma was featured in the 1973 edition of Who’s Who of American Women. Many people remember Alma’s beautiful yard (with the tulips every spring) at the corner of Keightly and Drew Lane in Kingwood. Alma is survived by her twin daughter and son Louise Satterfield (husband Marshall, deceased) of Little Rock and Lester Lowrey, Jr. (wife Cheryl) of Bellevue, Nebraska, daughter Peggy Baxter (husband Jerry) of Franklin, Texas, granddaughter Vanessa Lowrey of Glendale Heights, Illinois and grandson Andy Baxter of College Station, TX. Alma was preceded in death by her husband, Tillman Lester Lowrey, Sr., parents Robert and Frieda (Trager) Heinke of Mabelvale, and sisters Rosa Heinke and Frieda Heinke of Mabelvale.
