Robert Hawk Sr., 74, my father, of Longs, South Carolina, formerly of Manahawkin, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on November 2nd with his loving wife Patricia and his son Robert Jr. by his side.
He was a sharpshooter in the US Army from 1964-1970. When travelling in the Army, he would fly big propeller planes, but he was terrified of flying...go figure. When he lived in New Jersey, his passion was surf fishing, having held the record for largest striped bass caught on rod and reel. My Dad would get me up at ungodly hours to go fishing, be it in thunderstorms, snow and an occasional swarm of green head flies. He was also an avid bowler, and got back into the sport to bowl with me...side note on this… he still owes me millions of dollars in side bets...hear that Dad?
When he moved to South Carolina, his new love was the relaxing sport of golf. He really enjoyed cursing at the ball and defective clubs, but honestly, he was really good at it. So good, he had 3 hole-in-ones...another side note… he owed me no money. He also loved fishing, and cursing at the fish for not biting on his perfect cast.
His true love was his wife Pat, married for 52 years, and they got to travel and really enjoy life in retirement. He enjoyed going to Disney on Family vacations, and enduring every spinning ride for the sake of his grandkids. His grandkids, Mackenzie Rose and Chase Edward, were his pride and joy. Upon their arrival at the house, it was always said, “don't beat up on Poppy”, at which point they beat up on Poppy and they called him his visiting name, Poppy Poopy. He truly loved them with all his heart and was very proud of them.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years Patricia; his son Robert Jr. (Jennifer); his grandchildren Mackenzie Rose and Chase Edward; his sister Jean Kerner; and several nieces, nephews and extended family.
As per his wishes there will be no services, and if there was, he would simply say "What the hell are you all doing here”? Dad, we are really going to miss you. Say hi to Mom-Mom and play with Pooch and Shadow.
PS - don't curse at the little white ball or the fish, I think they frown on that up there.
