On May 27, 2024, Renee Czutno Jeffrey, 49, passed away unexpectedly. Renee was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother and friend, as well as an extraordinary teacher who positively impacted countless lives. She will be dearly missed.
The daughter of Joseph P. and Carole T. (née Slebodnick) Czutno, Renee was born on May 2, 1975, in Hazleton, PA, the youngest of three siblings. Raised in a hard-working family with immigrant roots, Renee and her older sisters, Tara and Nicole, grew up with a strong work ethic, a drive to succeed, and a deep respect for education. These themes went on to define Renee’s life.
At 14, Renee met the love of her life, Jonathan, while working in a local Burger King. He was an older man of 17, however, so the timing of her crush was not quite right and they went their separate ways. Renee completed high school and went on to graduate from Penn State in 1997; she remained a fiercely loyal fan for the rest of her life. Meanwhile, Jonathan, who had served in the Army and moved to North Myrtle Beach, SC, decided to search for her in hopes of reconnecting. The reunion was a success, and they were married in 2003, welcoming a beautiful daughter, Jada, and creating the family that was always first in her heart.
Renee was a gifted and dedicated educator who was always eager to pursue professional development. She earned a Master’s Degree from Wilkes University and taught in Pennsylvania at Shenandoah Valley High School for ten years before landing in her school home at North Myrtle Beach Middle School in 2009. She considered herself blessed to be part of the Chief Family, knew her “tribe” always had her back, and loved being part of the dynamic energy within those walls.
Renee was a well-loved teacher, a respected leader on the faculty, and a generous and enthusiastic mentor for teachers and students alike. Highly creative, she excelled at engaging students through innovative strategies; she was always planning ways to make learning fun. She particularly enjoyed establishing meaningful relationships, and it was easy to see the connection she established with students past and present. She had a dry wit, loved to laugh and did so often. One thing that set her apart was her love for – and ability to teach in -- high heeled shoes! She was one tough lady.
The energy and care Renee put into her teaching was reflected in her efforts on behalf of others and the community. She led the Student of the Month program, and was particularly devoted to Special Olympics. Each year the Chiefs participated in the Myrtle Beach Polar Plunge Fundraiser, she was right there, helping to lead a fierce competition in the school, and encouraging students to get involved. On the day of the event, many of them would plunge by her side into the frigid Atlantic for the cause that warmed her heart.
Renee’s deepest love was family, and she treasured the time spent with them, whether at home, by the pool, at the beach, or grabbing a coffee date with Jada. Renee also loved to dance, and she was a huge fan of Prince and his music, particularly Purple Rain. (It didn’t hurt that her favorite color was purple!)
Renee’s strong drive and determination aided her in overcoming the effects of a serious automobile accident some years ago, and, more recently, fighting -- and beating -- cancer. Throughout her cancer battle, she never lost sight of her desire to get back into the classroom, and her no-nonsense attitude, no-complaints perseverance and general toughness endeared her to everyone around her. Her spirit was strong, and she was always full of hope.
A generous and protective soul, Renee lived a life of love and service. Her thoughtful consideration of others was a lifelong trait, and her passing leaves a huge void behind for many, including the neighbors who became like a second family to her during her illness. Her loved ones will be forever grateful for the many kindnesses shown by family, friends and neighbors during that time.
Renee’s legacy and impact on those around her is evidenced by the heartfelt sentiments being shared by so many voices throughout the entire community. All who knew her have no doubt she is smiling down from above, looking out for all those she loves and sending purple vibes of love, comfort, and peace.
Renee was predeceased by her father, Joseph P. Czutno; and is survived by her mother, Carole Theresa Czutno; her loving husband, Jonathan; her daughter, Jada; her sisters, Tara Phoenix Czutno and Nicole Czutno Young; and nieces and nephews Veda Smith and Nicholas, Zachary, Alex and Madelyn Young; as well as an adoring circle of friends and former students.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will take place on Saturday, June 15th at 2 p.m. in the Palm Lake Clubhouse, located at 134 Palm Lakes Blvd., Little River, SC 29566. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Special Olympics.
