On June 19, 1960, Mildred married William M. Harris and was a loving and devoted wife until his death in 2005. A graduate of East Carolina College, she taught at Youngsville High School for several years before moving to the Windy Hill section of North Myrtle Beach. Mildred and William purchased the formerly known gift shop, Hatley's and renamed it "Susan's Gift Shop" after their daughter, Susan. After 25 years, they sold the shop to enjoy retirement. They moved to Sunset Beach, NC following their retirement. Mildred was a member of Seaside United Methodist Church, Sunset Beach, NC.
Mildred was a 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Millbrook Chapter; a 47 years member of the Order of the Amaranth where she was Grand Royal Matron from 1992-1993; and a member and Past President of the North Myrtle Beach Woman's Club. Mildred was known for her delicious homemade jams, and each year, her strawberry jams would be the "top seller" for the Order of the Amaranth fundraiser.
Surviving is her daughter, Susan H. Carroll and grandson, Donald "Trey" Carroll III. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
The family will host a drop in on Sunday, July 7, 2024 from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. at the home of Susan Carroll. Burial will be held at a later date in the Harris Cemetery in Pinetown, NC.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to be made to the Amaranth Diabetes Foundation, Carol Ekren, Grand Secretary, Grand Court of South Carolina, 6919 Vernon Hall, Williamsburg, VA 23188-7298.
