Joseph Patrick Kane, 75, passed peacefully in his home on Saturday, April 23, 2022. A long-time Virginia Beach resident, he lived most recently in Richmond, VA and North Myrtle Beach, SC. He was born in Chester, PA and raised in Falls Church, VA to the late John “Jack” J. Kane and Rose Mary (Boyle) Kane.
Joseph graduated from Bishop Denis O’Connell High School in 1964, where he was a two-way starter on the football team. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Virginia in 1968, where he developed a lifelong love of learning – and Wahoo athletics. He served in the Army from November 1968 to November 1970. He was stationed in Eastern Germany near the Czechoslovakian border as the member of a U.S. Army tank crew, earning the rank of Staff Sergeant.
Joseph was well read in many areas and had an entrepreneurial spirit, which led to a career in business development. He worked as a business incubator, raising capital for many startups across Virginia and the globe. His brilliant storytelling abilities, comedic timing, and boisterous laugh brought countless professional and personal partnerships together. Joseph loved cooking, much to the culinary delight of his friends, family, and beloved canine companions Gracie, Remy (a rescue) and Chance (a rescue).
Survivors include his daughter, Mary Ann Wilder of Tacoma, WA; two granddaughters, Ellen and Rachel of Tacoma, WA; one sister, Ellen Kroese (Gerard) of The Hague, Netherlands; two brothers, Michael (Liz) of Forest Hill, MD and Thomas of North Myrtle Beach, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, colleagues, and friends who will miss sharing a well-crafted gin & tonic on the porch with him. Two brothers, Robert and John, and niece, Christine, preceded Joseph in death.
A memorial celebration of Joseph’s life will be held in late 2022. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to your local dog or animal rescue organization.
