John Richard (Dick) Slaughter, Sr. was born in Florence, Alabama on April 18, 1937. After graduating from high school in Jackson, Tennessee, he attended Auburn University where he graduated in 1962 from the School of Engineering.
Dick’s first love, of course, was his family, consisting of his wife, Ann; two sons, John Richard, Jr. and Scott Christopher (Malisa); and four grandchildren, Casey, Garrison, Blake, and Sam.
A close second was his love for Auburn University where he met his wife of 59 years. As a true “War Eagle”, he was always keeping up with Auburn athletes and athletics and constantly meeting other Auburn people wherever he went.
He began a six-year career in the Auburn National Guard, later transferring to the unit in Chattanooga, Tennessee where he began his civilian career with Buster Brown Textiles.
Dick coached T-ball and little league baseball while the boys were young and later moved up to referee high school football every Friday night in the Chattanooga area, where the family lived for over 25 years.
As a Director of Quality Control for Buster Brown Apparel, he was active in many professional organizations. Later as Vice President of Manufacturing for Outer Banks, the family relocated to Lumberton, North Carolina. After several years there, Dick and Ann moved to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina where he started a second career as a real estate agent with Coldwell-Banker Chicora.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
