Joe Billy Cornwell, Jr., age 72, of North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina passed away on Thursday, October 6, 2022. Born on October 4, 1950 in Lincoln County, North Carolina he was the son of the late Joe Billy Cornwell, Sr. and Della Kay McGinnis Cornwell.
Survivors include his loving wife of 34 years, Elizabeth “Beth” Cornwell; children, Angie K. Holder (Grant), Bill Cornwell (Melissa); step-daughter, Angie Dawn Nichols (Pat); grandchildren, Kelsie Davis, Anna Holder, Garrison Nichols, Michael H. Cornwell, Jackson Nichols, Sydney Cornwell; sister, Diane Russell (Dale) and his beloved fur baby, Bella. Joe was preceded in death by his parents along with his brother, Michael C. Cornwell.
A true sports fanatic, Joe had a lifelong history with a love for the game. A graduate of the class of 1969 Kings Mountain High School, Joe was an active and dedicated high school football player. His love for sports led him on to a career in broadcasting, coaching and officiating. Joe was the local sports broadcaster for the Asheville TV station and he also coached little league baseball and officiated high school sporting events. In 2012, Joe and his wife Elizabeth moved to North Myrtle Beach from Huntersville, North Carolina. After a while of coastal living, Joe became a member of the OD Shag Club. Joe also enjoyed fishing, riding his golf cart, traveling and just having a good time with his family and friends. Joe and Beth visited all 50 states in the United States, 44 of which they traveled to in their RV.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, October 15, 2022 at Lee Funeral Home and Crematory. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service from 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
