Gerald Gibson Smith, devoted husband, loving father, and wonderful grandfather, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 23, 2025, at the age of 89—reuniting with his beloved wife of 55 years, Merideth. Born in Greenville, South Carolina, to the late Robert and Edith Smith, Gerald's life was rich with experiences, adventure, service, and community spirit.
Throughout his life, Gerald called many places home, including Greenville SC, Tupelo, MS, Richmond and Ashland, VA. In 1969, he found his favorite home at the beach, where he not only built a home but also left an indelible mark on the community by constructing landmarks along the Grand Strand—including the original Dixie Stampede, Carolina Opry, and several other treasured establishments.
Gerald’s dedication to leadership and teamwork carried him through his formative years at Clemson University, where, as a cadet, he proudly played in the Tiger Marching Band. Following his academic pursuits, he joined the United States Air Force as a cartographer. Gerald’s commitment to service was evident throughout his life. He began his journey in scouting at a young age, volunteered as a junior scoutmaster when stationed at Shaw AFB and later served as a Scoutmaster at Trinity UMC North Myrtle Beach for many years.
Gerald was actively involved in numerous organizations such as the Lions Club, the Jaycees, Boy Scouts of America, Keep America Beautiful, and the Clean City Committee. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, and he was a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
Above all, Gerald cherished the simple yet profound joys of life. Family gatherings, his wife’s cooking, the booming sound of a pipe organ, the laughter of his beloved grandchildren—Hampton, Walker, and Merideth—and he always smiled at a rousing rendition of Clemson’s Tiger Rag.
He is lovingly survived by his son, Lawson Smith (Jada); granddaughter, Andrea Hughes (Kyle); great-granddaughter, Payton; his daughter, Gwin S. Connell (John); grandchildren, Hampton, Walker, and Merideth Connell. He is also survived by one brother Kirby Smith, several nieces, nephews, and dear friends who enriched his life. He will also be missed by his cherished caregivers Beverly, Patti, Kris, and Brittany who enabled him to remain home where loved to be.
Friends and family are invited to join in celebrating Gerald’s remarkable life Sunday, March 9th, 2 o’clock in the afternoon at Trinity UMC, 706 14th Avenue S. NMB. Interment immediately after in the church columbarium. The family will then receive friends at home following the service, all are welcome.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Trinity UMC in Gerald’s memory and share your fond memories and condolences at www.leefhandcrematory.com. Gerald’s legacy of service, community, and joy will continue to inspire all who knew him.
