Donna Sprague, lovingly known as “Nonna,” moved to heaven on November 19, 2024, at the age of 91. She was born on March 30, 1933, to Mildred Irby and Joseph Rukenbrod. She was predeceased by her husband, T Sprague, and son, Casey McDuffie.
Donna was a force of nature with a heart that embraced all living things. Her passion for animals led her to play a pivotal role in creating what is now the Fur Ever Home Cat Sanctuary. The sanctuary’s sign, "Donna's Dream," stands as a testament to her dedication and compassion.
An accomplished swimmer, Donna was among the first underwater mermaids to perform at Florida’s Weeki Wachee Springs. She later took her talents on the road with an underwater show of her own. Her life was full of colorful stories, including being selected for a publicity event that led to a date with Elvis Presley. Donna continued to swim almost daily for much of her life.
Donna spent her career in Myrtle Beach as the owner of McDuffie Motel Realty. She played a key role in selling many of the beloved “mom-and-pop” hotels that once lined the Grand Strand. Even as high-rises replaced the older buildings, Donna could recall where each one had been.
Known for her radiant smile and warmth, Donna never met a stranger. She had a gift for bringing people together; and nothing made her happier than having the family gathered and the stories and laughter that ensued. Her kindness extended to animals in need—Donna rescued countless dogs and cats, always choosing the ones least likely to be adopted.
In 1985, Donna married the love of her life, T Sprague. Though their time together was brief, spanning just five wonderful years before his passing, Donna cherished their memories for the rest of her life.
Donna is survived by her daughters, Kristie Kiltz (Bruce), Nina Ortiz (Rafael), Missy Pfahler (Chuck); her stepdaughter, Vicki Sprague Ravenel (William); her stepsons, Ernie McDuffie and Roy McDuffie; her grandchildren, Sekel Ortiz, Noa Ortiz Ogden (Nathan), Logan Ortiz, Charlie Pfahler, Blake Church (Kris), and Brad Church (Kim); a brother, Joseph Ruckenbrod (Franny), a sister, Linda Julian (Thurmond), a stepsister, Faith Jenkins (Dr. Thomas); a special and beloved friend, Debbie Topping, and son, Chad Topping; and countless others who were touched by her love and legacy.
Donna’s life was a shining example of love, generosity, and joy. She will be deeply missed and forever held in our hearts.
The family will hold a Celebration of Life at a future date.
