David Nicol passed away in Hospice care on December 4, 2023 after a brief but hard fought battle with several severe health issues. He was loved by all who knew him and never knew a stranger, just someone he hadn't met.
He was born on December 29th, 1945, the 7th generation David Nicol to David and Elizabeth “Betty” Nicol. He spent part of his early childhood in Edinburgh before his family emigrated to Toronto, Canada. During his young adult years he worked as a Toronto policeman and vividly remembered working security at a Beatles concert. He followed his older sister Evelyn and her husband Jerry when they moved to America where he worked at Ford Motor for a brief time. He soon realized that an inside job wasn't for him, so he went to work at Norfolk and Southern Railroad for almost 30 years.
He married his first wife Barb and although the marriage didn't last, they were blessed with two sons. In 1974 he met and married the love of his life Maureen (Patrick Calvin) and they started a blended family of his two sons and her daughter and son.
He loved all sports and enjoyed bowling and darts, but his real passion was golf at which he excelled. Some of his favorite times were spent watching Ohio State football with his family and friends at the “Nicol Tavern”. How many times did we hear him say “no way we can lose this game.”
The neighborhood kids would knock on the door to see if Davey could come out to play. He was the ref or the ump or just another player.
He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Betty, sister Evelyn, nephew Sean and sister-in-law, Irene. He is survived by his devoted wife of 49 years, Maureen, children David (Kathy) Nicol, Derek (Jamie) Nicol, Heather Calvin (John) Jones and Neil (Jill) Calvin, his 8 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren, as well as his brother-in-law Jerry and many nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved dearly.
As per David's wishes there will be an immediate cremation with a short local (Myrtle Beach) wake and a later celebration of life to be held in the spring in Ohio. In lieu of flowers the family has asked that, if you wish, a small donation to the Salvation Army or your local food bank would be appreciated.
So fill to me the parting glass.
And drink a health whate'er befalls.
Then gently rise and softly call.
Good night and joy be to you all.
