Charles Dennis Bowers
Charles Dennis Bowers (Denny), born on January 6, 1948, passed away on April 1, 2022. Denny was raised in Baltimore, Maryland where he met and married his wife of 45 years. Together they raised three children on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Upon retirement Denny and his wife Peggy moved to Bradenton, Florida and most recently to North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
He loved his family and friends and filled every room he entered with joy. He was an avid gardener who excelled at growing orchids and a bird lover who outsmarted the squirrels from his bird feeders. He never missed a summer afternoon with a bushel of Maryland blue crabs and pitchers of cold beer while seated at a wooden picnic table. He loved playing Pitch (with some slight cheating) and watching The History Channel from his leather recliner. He took extreme pride in his five grandchildren whom he would hug tightly while reclined together in Pa’s Chair. He loved to use his oversized remote control which nobody else in the family can figure out how to use now. Though he did not coin them, he often recited the phrases, “Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff” and “Love Ya Back”. He was a magnificent story teller with stories deserving to be shared.
Denny experienced more than his fair share of war’s ugliness while serving in The United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. Denny holds the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat “V” (Valor); a Gold Star in lieu of a second Naval Commendation medal; the Purple Heart medal with “*” (denotes multiple awards); the National Defense Service medal; the Vietnam Service medal; the Presidential Unit Citation medal; and the Vietnam Campaign medal. Although he didn’t read William Shakespeare, he lived by his quote, “We few, we precious few. We who have shed our blood, together, shall forever be…a band of brothers” and revered all the men and women who have served in the military.
After an honorable discharge from the Marine Corps, Denny returned home and graduated from the
University of Baltimore with a degree in Personnel and Labor Relations. He retired from the State of Maryland after spending 31 years as a Veterans Counselor.
Denny is survived by his loving wife Peggy (Whittington) Bowers; his two daughters Kerrilyn Patricia Bowers and Megan Anne Bowers both of Costa Rica; his daughter-in-law Erica (King) Bowers of Minnesota; and his grandchildren Zoe Lu, Ani Lyn, and Ever Somervell of Costa Rica; and Tristan Xavier and Kaya Rain of Minnesota. He was recently preceded in death by his son Scott Bradley Bowers. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends whom he considered family.
A Celebration of Life will be held on July 16, 2022 at Lee Funeral Home located at 11840 Highway 90, Little River, South Carolina at 12 o’clock noon with a visitation to follow.
Although our hearts are shattered that Denny has left us, we will all raise a glass or two in honor of Denny being such a unique and special part of our lives.
In lieu of flowers, Denny would hope that you will do an unexpected and unsolicited act of kindness for someone in his honor.
