Robert proudly served his country in the United States Air Force in the 1st Radio Relay Squadron in the Korean War. When he returned home from Germany, he met the love of his life, Carolyn Kay Murdock, whom he married in 1957 then shared 51 years of marriage with until her passing in 2008.
Just as he was dedicated to his family, he was dedicated to his community. Robert worked for 35 years in telecommunications as Staff Manager of Corporate Communications for Illinois Bell. After retiring from Illinois Bell, he became the Park District Supervisor for Stickney Township Robert was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, the American Legion Post 757, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post 80, Tilden Tech Alumni, USAF First Radio Reunion Committee, and a long-time member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
Robert was very patriotic. He was honored to attend the 76th Chicago Honor Flight in 2017, and was active with his Legion and VFW posts. In his spare time, Robert enjoyed woodworking and other home repair projects in his basement workshop.
Robert is survived by his children, Debra Greening and David (Sheryl) Greening, his grandchildren, Christine (Michael) Nelson, Kevin (Sarah) Greening, and Shawn (Alaina) Greening; and his great-grandchildren, Annika Nelson and Blair Greening. Robert was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carolyn; his son, Douglas; his grandson Christopher; his parents, Gustav and Emma; and his siblings Henry Greening, Reinhold Greening and Evelyn Schlager.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, December 3, 2022 from 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m., with a funeral service beginning at 10:30 a.m. at Blake-Lamb Funeral Home, 5015 Lincoln Avenue, Lisle, Illinois 60532 Interment at Fairmount Willow Hills Memorial Park.
