Born in Lakewood, Ohio on December 6, 1919, Nan attended Purdue University and obtained a sociology degree from the University of Southern Maine. She worked at landscape design and taught business courses before becoming a state employee in Maine's Bureau for the Elderly. Nan also ran for a state legislative seat and worked tirelessly on Angus King's campaigns for governor.
A long-time resident of Lewiston before moving to Topsham, Nan was always active in community affairs. She was involved with schools, literacy programs, the Goodwill warehouse and was a founding member of the Maine Memorial Society. She sat on boards with numerous organizations and was especially attached to the Lewiston Public Library. She often said " a good book fed the mind, good food fed the body and good plants fed the soul."
Nan followed news and politics avidly, supported a wide range of charities and enjoyed her hobbies: gardening, puzzling, needlework, reading, travel and museums.
She is survived by her children: Al DuMais of Lisbon, Dick DuMais of Jackson, Wyoming, Carol MacIvor of Ottawa, Ontario and Chip DuMais of Gainesville, Florida. She is also survived by grandchildren, Rob DuMais of Lisbon, Scott and Joanne DuMais of Saco, Will MacIvor of Toronto, Ontario, Eliza DuMais and Tyler DuMais of Gainesville, Florida as well as great-grandchildren, Zachary and Christopher DuMais of Saco.

The family would like to thank the staff at Cadigan Lodge for their wonderful care of and attention to Nan over the last few years.
There will be no services in accordance with Nan's wishes which are expressed by a favorite passage of hers:
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow;
I am the diamond glints on snow;
I am the sunlight on ripened grain;
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the sweet uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight;
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand on my grave and cry:
I am not there; I did not die.
