He was born in Topsham on March 19, 1920, the son of the late Leon and Angie (Wheeler) Merrill. He was educated in Lisbon and graduated from Lisbon Falls High School in 1938.
Melvin married Ethel (Mavis) Hunnewell in Topsham in 1945. She predeceased him in 1963. He worked for more than 30 years at Pejepscott Paper Co., retiring as a truck driver.
He was a member of The Topsham Baptist Church. Melvin was a humble man and enjoyed a simple life on the farm. He particularly enjoyed herding cattle, working in the woods with his horses and listening to the Red Sox on the radio. He looked forward to visits with his family and bragged often of his grandchildren.
He leaves two sons, Leon and Scott Merrill, of Topsham; five daughters, Barbara Bean and husband, Roger, of Buxton, Jane Dunton and husband, Wayne, of Gorham, Betty Merrill of Lisbon Falls, Gloria Packard and husband, Lester, of Oxford, and Linda Merrill of Topsham; and many, many grandchildren, great- and great- great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Nancy Richards.
