1933-2022
After a life full of family, friends and bad jokes, Elwin Clarence Beal passed away on April 6th at the Androscoggin Hospice House. Born on June 24th, 1933, to Annie and Clarence Beal in Lisbon Falls, he along with his six brothers and sisters spent his life in the Bowdoin and Durham area.
Elwin worked for in the local Worumbo and Gypsom mills, spent time in the US Army, and was a very dedicated member of the Durham Fire Department, serving as their Chief 1961-1967. He was very proud of his fire service and continued to be an active member of the department and the corporation until his passing. He was one of 13 founding members of the Durham Amvets and has remained a lifetime member. Elwin was always a presence in the community, typically dropping in to local stores and businesses to share a bad joke or old story with anyone that would listen and enjoy his company.
Elwin enjoyed spending time with his family- he had three children- Bonnie, Richelle and James, who all went on to grow their families in the same area. He enjoyed dropping in to see them, most often unannounced and typically with something he found in his travels to show them or give to his grandkids. He always appreciated his daughter-in-law’s cooking and his family would always laugh with him about how much he could pack onto his tall, rail-thin frame at every family gathering.
Elwin was predeceased by his loving companion, Elena, who he spent many years of his later life with. He also joins in Heaven his parents, his sisters Donna Cunningham and Beverly Wallace, and his brother, Clayton Beal. He leaves behind three siblings, Janice St. Amant, Betty Byrd and Kenneth Beal. He will be missed by his children, Bonnie Caron and her husband David, Richelle Niles and her partner Randall Flaig, and Jim Beal and his wife Kelly. He had six grandchildren (Taylor, Spencer, Rebecka, Rachel, Shawn and Darren) and eight great-grandchildren (Lexie, Riley, Nathaniel, Olivia, Gracelyn, Acer, Nolan, and Corinna) with another on the way in August.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in his honor to the Durham Fire Department or the Androscoggin Hospice House.
