"Sue" to her friends, "Mom" to her kids, Mrs. Dougherty was born in Maine but lived her entire life, from infancy, in New Jersey. After high school, she spent a year in New York studying and singing in Greenwich Village coffeehouses. As a single parent in the late 60s and early 70s, Susan attended Union College and Seton Hall University as a psychology major, and volunteered for a 24-hour crisis hotline —which was the beginning of decades of volunteering. Professionally, she worked for years as an administrative assistant with an emphasis on the law, and as a public school aide and music teacher. And while raising a family, Sue gave private guitar and piano lessons.
Susan was known for her deep faith, her love of music and cooking, her boundless energy, and her affinity for two sips of coffee — maybe a smidge more. She had an encyclopedic knowledge of scripture, from which she constantly sought and imparted wisdom. In her spare time, she wrote poetry, lyrics, essays, and a family cookbook, and took every chance she got to exercise her green thumb.
A generous and kind woman, Susan touched many lives, and will live on in the hearts of her family and countless friends.
Susan is survived and beloved by her children Jesse, Tommy, David, and Louise; her daughters-in-law Jane and Jennifer; her sister Dianne, brother-in-law Joe, and her nephew Micah and niece Jenny; her grandchildren Louise, Justin, Christopher, Liam, Holly, Jesse Jr., Violet Rose, and Mavis; and her companion Stuart. She goes to join her late husband David Dougherty.
