MERVINA ANITA GARVEY, 92 years old, of Kingston, Jamaica, Brooklyn, New York, Kissimmee, Florida and southern California passed away on June 25, 2024 in Los Angeles, California.
Mervina Anita Garvey was born on April 16, 1932 in Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies to Louise Cassandra Smith and Burnett Alexander Williams. She was educated in Jamaica and became a registered nurse in 1957. She met Eric George Garvey while she was attending nursing school in St. Ann’s Bay, Jamaica. Mervina and Eric were married on July 4, 1959 and had three children, Althea, Karen and Eric Jr.
Mervina worked at various Jamaican hospitals before migrating to Brooklyn, New York in the early 1960’s where she worked as a registered nurse for the N.Y.C. Health & Hospital Corporation for over 30 years. Mervina enjoyed her work as supervisor of the Psychiatric Nursing Department for 15 years before retirement in 1996.
She loved her family and Jesus very much. She taught her children to love your family, love and serve the Lord Jesus Christ, pursue education and your passion. Mervina had a giving heart and she and her husband Eric Garvey Sr. were instrumental in sponsoring the migration of several family members from Jamaica to the United States, now in the 3rd to 4th generations since arrival.
Mervina, along with her mother Louise, was a charter member of Brooklyn Faith Seventh Day Adventist Church in Brooklyn, NY, which was founded in 1976. Mervina moved to Florida in 1996 and continued to remain active in the church. Due to illness, Mervina relocated to New Jersey to reside with her daughter
Karen from 2009 to 2014. During that time, she attended Christ Temple of the Apostolic Faith in the Village of Harlem, and continued to serve the Lord, contributed to the help those in need. She has been residing in California with her daughter since 2014, and has attended Carson Christian Outreach Apostolic Church, with her daughter Althea. Mervina loved to sing and she participated in singing her favorite hymns to the best of her ability just days before her transition.
Mervina A. Garvey is survived by her daughters Althea E. Garvey and Karen M. Wardlaw, her son Eric G. Garvey, Jr., her grandson Keon A. Wright, her brothers Neville Williams, Carlton Williams and her sister Pauline Hyatt, cousins, nieces, nephews and other family members.
Mervina had special compassion for cancer survivors that extended from the loss of her first patient in Nursing School in Jamaica, a child with cancer. One of her favorite charities was St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, which focuses on the treatment of childhood diseases including cancer. Two going home services will be held for Mervina. On the west coast, the funeral service will be held at Crippen Mortuary, 2900 Honolulu Avenue, La Crescenta, CA 91214 on Wednesday July 10, 2024 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm with Suffragan Bishop Thomas Alexander, Sr. of Carson Christian Outreach Apostolic Church, Carson, CA officiating.
On the east coast, the funeral service will be held on Saturday July 13, 2024, from 9:00 am to 11:30 am with Pastor Dr. James I. Clark, Jr. of Christ Temple, Harlem, N.Y. officiating. Burial will follow at Rosehill Cemetery and Crematory, 792 E Edgar Road, Linden, New Jersey. Visitation will be held at Krowicki McCracken Funeral Home, 2124 E. St. Georges Avenue, Linden N.J. 07036 at 9:00 am. Krowicki McCracken Funeral Home will be handling the funeral and burial arrangements in New Jersey.
