Diego Bolanos

In April 27, 1979, at the age of 14 Diego suffered a diving accident which left him paralyzed from the neck down.

In February 1980, Diego 's family decided to move to the United States to accelerate his rehabilitation which was progressing very slowly.

In March 1980, Diego was admitted at Children Specialized Hospital (CSH) to initiate the second part of his rehabilitation. This experience was very difficult because the family knew very little English. At CSH, he was assigned a young counselor named Jim Pascuiti. At first, Diego was not to keen to the idea of getting counseling but as result of Jim’s persistence, he became more amicable to the idea of sharing thoughts and feelings with someone other than his pillow. That was the start of a long lasting friendship.

In September 1980, Diego started high school at Elizabeth High School (EHS) this was a challenge since it was the first activity he was going to engage in as a disabled person without having his mother or the rest of the family caring for him.

In June 1984, Diego graduated EHS in the top one percent of the class and received the “Outstanding Senior Trophy Award” at graduation, which he dedicated to his mother and to the memory of his father whom had died the year before.

In May 1984, Diego was accepted to Rutgers University, College of Engineering where he majored in Electrical Engineering with a concentration in electronics and option in Biomedical Engineering.

At Rutgers, Diego participated in different organizations where he practiced his leadership and organizational skills. In his sophomore year, Diego co-founded the Rutgers Handicap able Organization (R.H.O.) and later served as treasurer. This organization was responsible for a variety of changes in the psychological and structural barriers which affect the physically challenged at Rutgers.

At Rutgers Diego was also treasurer of the society of Hispanic Engineers, whose main goal was to recruit, retain, and graduate Latino students at Rutgers. Within the organization, he was a member of the out-reach program which organizes trips to nearby urban high schools to talk to minority students in order to encourage them to attend college.

After graduating from Rutgers, Diego competed, with considerable success, in numerous wheelchair table tennis tournaments around the country. As a result of this success, he was selected to the USA Paralympic Team that represented the United States in the 1992 Barcelona Paralympics. Though Diego did not win, the experience was amazing and truly unforgettable.

In September 1992, Diego started and completed an MBA at Rutgers University. During his attendance at the Rutgers Graduate School of Management, Diego became president of the Rutgers Hispanic MBA Association, a professional student organization that promotes the interests of Hispanic students university-wide. Diego also participated in two university committees. The ADA Committee to make recommendations on disability issues and President Francis L. Lawrence’s Committee to make recommendations on multicultural student life for the Newark Campus.

In November 1995, Diego started his professional careers at Schering-Plough (SP) as an Associate Quality Engineer. During his 13 year career at SP, he was promoted several times and became manager of the Quality Engineering Department.

In July 1997, Diego married his beautiful wife Beatriz and became father to their son, Lucas.

In May 2008, Diego moved on from SP to Purdue Pharma where he became the Manager of Supplier Quality Assurance. At Purdue, Diego Provided Quality Assurance support to numerous products in the areas of quality, operational effectiveness, and Good Manufacturing Practice compliance. This includes investigation resolution, corrective action implementation.

In June 2014, Diego was diagnosed with leukemia; received urgent chemotherapy which was brutal on his body however, with strength and tenacity was able to overcome into a full remission. Diego continued excelling at Purdue Pharma being promoted to Senior Manager Quality Assurance. In this role Diego managed and performed complaint investigations, streamlined complaint and APR processes, and implemented short count complaint papers among other responsibilities.

In April 2019, Diego began working for Daiichi Sankyo Pharma as a Quality Assurance Manager IMP-GMP. In his new role, Diego managed the Investigational Medicinal Product (IMP), participated as a cross-functional team member to provide product quality/GMP support, managed the IMP Temperature Excursion Program as well as various other responsibilities.

In April 2022, Diego was promoted to Associate Director, GMP QA Tech Ops at Daiichi Sankyo Pharma. Diego managed the team responsible for providing technical activities supporting QA GMP commercial and investigational medicinal product (IMP). Diego was responsible for identifying and driving process improvement opportunities for new or established products or processes internally or at contract manufacturing as well as ensuring proactive planning and management for relevant activities involved in project management to comply with regulatory requirements and projected milestones.

In 2023, Diego was nearing the process of being promoted again at Daiichi Sankyo Pharma to the Director level with even more responsibility and a larger team. Diego loved Daiichi Sanyo Pharma and stated he would not work anywhere else even for greater monetary compensation. Diego loved all his work colleagues, his manager Chad Feiler, his dear friends and colleagues, Christina Roberts, Gizella Kronstat, and all the Daiichi Sankyo Pharma family. His family is extremely grateful to the love, value, care, respect, and opportunity granted to our beloved Diego by the Daiichi Sankyo Pharma family.

Diego’s academic and professional achievements brought him much pride and joy however; spending free time with his family made him the happiest. He was a loving husband, father, and son. Diego loved to read, watch sports, and go to the movies, parties, family events, travel with his lovely wife Beatriz Bolanos. He frequently spent time with his mom Mariela in all opportunities possible. With his son Lucas, Diego followed and cheered on the Colombia soccer team among many other family activities, saw him get married to his wife Katherine who quickly became a daughter to Diego in all aspects. Diego loved his pup, Luna, who was always by his side during his long work days. His cousins John, Alejandro, Amparo always maintained a very close relationship with Diego. Beatriz Bolanos’ family were also very close and very much Diego’s family, his sister in-law Cristina, her husband Harold, their daughters Sandra and Melissa, cousins Giovanni, Olga, and, Monica all supported and maintained very close relationship with our beloved Diego.

Diego Bolanos passed away on Monday, June 5th at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey. At his final moments by his side were his beloved wife of 26 years, Beatriz and son Lucas. Diego was 58 years of age, his courage and fighting spirit was so great, he was able to say his final goodbyes to all his loved ones during his last days.

A Visitation for Diego will be held Friday, June 9th, 2023 at Krowicki McCracken Funeral Home, 2124 E Saint Georges Ave, Linden NJ from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Friends and family are invited to gather at the funeral home Saturday morning 8:30 AM before heading to mass, which will take place 10:00 AM at St. Mary's of the Assumption Church, 155 Washington Ave., Elizabeth, NJ 07202. Following the funeral mass will be the funeral at Graceland Memorial Park, 1900 Galloping Hill Rd, Kenilworth, NJ 07033.

El 27 de abril de 1979, a la edad de 14 años, Diego sufrió una lesión permanente en la médula espinal debido a un accidente en una piscina durante un paseo del colegio.

Al principio, Diego no estaba muy entusiasmado con la idea de recibir asesoramiento, pero como resultado de la persistencia de Jim, se volvió más amigable con la idea de compartir pensamientos y sentimientos con alguien que no sea su almohada. Ese fue el comienzo de una amistad duradera.

En septiembre de 1980, Diego comenzó la escuela secundaria en Elizabeth High School (EHS), esto fue un desafío ya que era la primera actividad que realizaría como una persona discapacitada sin tener a su madre o al resto de la familia al cuidado de él.

En junio de 1984, Diego se graduó de EHS en el uno por ciento superior de la clase y recibió el "Premio al Trofeo de Mayores Sobresalientes" en la graduación, que dedicó a su madre y a la memoria de su padre, quien había muerto el año anterior.

En mayo de 1984, Diego fue aceptado en la Facultad de Ingeniería de la Universidad de Rutgers, donde se especializó en Ingeniería Eléctrica con especialización en electrónica y opción en Ingeniería Biomédica.

En Rutgers, Diego participó en diferentes organizaciones donde practicó su liderazgo y habilidades organizativas. En su segundo año, Diego cofundó la Organización para discapacitados de Rutgers (R.H.O.) y luego se desempeñó como tesorero. Esta organización fue responsable de una variedad de cambios en las barreras psicológicas y estructurales que afectan a los discapacitados físicos en Rutgers.

En Purdue, Diego brindó soporte de control de calidad a numerosos productos en las áreas de calidad, eficacia operativa y cumplimiento de buenas prácticas de fabricación. Esto incluye la resolución de la investigación, la implementación de acciones correctivas.

En junio de 2014, a Diego le diagnosticaron leucemia; recibió quimioterapia urgente que fue brutal en su cuerpo, sin embargo, con fuerza y tenacidad pudo sobreponerse a una remisión completa. Diego continuó destacándose en Purdue Pharma y fue ascendido a Gerente Senior de Control de Calidad. En este cargo, Diego administró y realizó investigaciones de quejas, simplificó los procesos de quejas y APR e implementó documentos de quejas de conteo corto, entre otras responsabilidades.

En abril de 2019, Diego comenzó a trabajar para Daiichi Sankyo Pharma como Gerente de Garantía de Calidad IMP-GMP. En abril de 2022, Diego fue ascendido a Director Asociado, GMP QA Tech Ops en Daiichi Sankyo Pharma. Diego dirigió el equipo responsable de proporcionar actividades técnicas de apoyo a QA GMP comercial y de medicamentos en investigación (IMP). Diego fue responsable de identificar e impulsar oportunidades de mejora de procesos para productos o procesos nuevos o establecidos internamente o en la fabricación por contrato, así como de garantizar la planificación y gestión proactivas de las actividades relevantes involucradas en la gestión de proyectos para cumplir con los requisitos reglamentarios y los hitos proyectados.

En 2023, Diego se acercaba al proceso de ser ascendido nuevamente en Daiichi Sankyo Pharma al nivel de Director con aún más responsabilidad y un equipo más grande. Diego amaba a Daiichi Sanyo Pharma y dijo que no trabajaría en ningún otro lugar ni siquiera por una mayor compensación monetaria. Diego amaba a todos sus compañeros de trabajo, su manager Chad Feiler, sus queridos amigos y compañeros, Christina Roberts, Gizella Kronstat y toda la familia Daiichi Sankyo Pharma. Su familia está sumamente agradecida con el amor, el valor, el cuidado, el respeto y la oportunidad otorgada a nuestro amado Diego por parte de la familia Daiichi Sankyo Pharma.

Sin embargo, los logros académicos y profesionales de Diego le trajeron mucho orgullo y alegría; pasar el tiempo libre con su familia lo hacía más feliz. Fue un amoroso esposo, padre e hijo. A Diego le encantaba leer, ver deportes e ir al cine, fiestas, eventos familiares, viajar con su encantadora esposa Beatriz Bolaños. Frecuentemente pasaba tiempo con su mamá Mariela en todas las oportunidades posibles. Con su hijo Lucas, Diego siguió y animó a la selección de fútbol de Colombia entre muchas otras actividades familiares, lo vio casarse con su esposa Katherine, quien rápidamente se convirtió en hija de Diego en todos los aspectos. Diego amaba a su perrita Luna, quien siempre estuvo a su lado durante sus largas jornadas de trabajo. Sus primos Juan, Alejandro, Amparo siempre mantuvieron una relación muy estrecha con Diego. La familia de Beatriz Bolaños también era muy unida y mucho la familia de Diego, su cuñada Cristina, su esposo Harold, sus hijas Sandra y Melissa, los primos Giovanni, Olga y Mónica, todos apoyaron y mantuvieron una relación muy cercana con nuestro querido Diego.

Diego Bolaños falleció el lunes 5 de junio en el Centro Médico Cooperman Barnabas en Livingston, Nueva Jersey. En sus últimos momentos a su lado estuvieron su amada esposa durante 26 años, Beatriz y su hijo Lucas. Diego tenía 58 años de edad, su coraje y espíritu de lucha fue tan grande que pudo despedirse definitivamente de todos sus seres queridos durante sus últimos días.

El velorio para Diego se llevará a cabo el viernes 9 de junio de 2023 en Krowicki McCracken Funeral Home, 2124 E Saint Georges Ave, Linden NJ de 5:00 p. m. a 9:00 p. m. Se invita a los amigos y familiares a reunirse en la funeraria el sábado por la mañana a las 8:30 a. m. antes de dirigirse a la misa, que se llevará a cabo a las 10:00 a. m. en la Iglesia de Santa María de la Asunción, 155 Washington Ave., Elizabeth, NJ 07202. la misa fúnebre será el funeral en Graceland Memorial Park, 1900 Galloping Hill Rd, Kenilworth, NJ 07033.
