Anne Romano, formerly of Elizabeth, NJ, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2023, in Westfield at the age of 97. Anne was born Anna Kurant to Michael and Anna on November 16, 1925, in Elizabeth, NJ, where she resided most of her life. She is predeceased by all her siblings, Alexander Lachtyk, Walter Lahtuk, Joseph Kurant, Mary Dabrowski, and Paul Kurant. She lovingly would refer to them in her fascinating stories as Curly, Lutchy, Jokie, Cha Cha (Ciocia), and Pyzon. Anne is also predeceased by her first husband, John March, who perished in the Pacific following the end of WWII. She had two children with her second husband, Rocco Romano. Her daughter Roxanne Coyle died in 1992. She is survived by daughter Renee Deresz (Jack) of Surfside Beach, SC, granddaughters Elizabeth Stevens (Tyler), Victoria Sullivan (Anthony), Roxanne Deresz (fiancé Jon McBain), and a grandson Christian Laganga of Highlands, NJ. Her two great-grandchildren Anne and Jack were blessed to have met her and lovingly called her Sweetie Pie, since that is what she called them. Anne was a life-long learner and would devote many hours to teaching herself foreign languages, doing crossword puzzles, crocheting doilies and afghans, or painting landscapesandstilllifeart. After her retirement as a Ward Clerk from Alexian Brothers Hospital, she volunteered with the Elizabeth Public Library as an ESL tutor. Her various pastimes turned her home into a magical place filled with hand-crocheted doilies, butterflies, oil paintings, and thrifted treasures. Those closest to Anne would remark on her resilience. Despite her petite stature she was strong, sturdy, and fiercely determined. Her witty sense of humor and affinity for jokes and puns are what most remember and are the traits that helped her survive for so many years. Despite a decades-long Alzheimer’s diagnosis, she continued to be full of love and joy. She could light up the room with her warm smile, blue eyes, and witty jokes. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association at alz.org. Friends and family are welcome for visitation from 4:00 to 8:00 PM on Thursday, January 26, 2023, at Krowicki McCracken Funeral Home in Linden. There will be a prayer service Friday, January 27, 2023 at 10:30 AM followed by interment at St Gertrude’s Cemetery in Colonia.
