Shirley Rinne passed away peacefully on May 12, 2018 at the age of 93. She was the daughter of Earl and Emma (Amend) Mitchell. Born, May 6, 1925, she had two sisters, Earlene and Jean and a brother Warren.
Shirley grew up in Lincoln, NE and was a University of Nebraska Cornhusker from childhood when she attended games standing in the knothole section. After graduating from Lincoln High School in 1943, she entered the work force and worked as a bookkeeper at Korsmeyer Electric during World War II. Following the war she married veteran, Richard Rinne, and together they raised three children.
Shirley worked outside the home until her first child was born. When her children were older, she provided loving day care and became lifelong friends with the children and their parents. She enjoyed doing crafts and making treats for everyone. Her brownies and pecan cookies were loved by family and friends. Shirley was a daily mall walker at Gateway Mall and a friend to many people who worked there and loved to eat her baked treats.
Shirley and Richard had season tickets to Cornhusker football games and attended games for 60 years and continued to support the team faithfully when they were no longer able to attend.
Shirley was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ for decades and very involved-serving on boards, helping with the youth group, participating in women’s circle, and making noodles. She recently belonged to Vine Congregational United Church of Christ.
In retirement, Shirley and Richard attended their grandchildren’s activities and traveled the world together making many friends along the way. Their grandchildren joined them on cruises to Alaska and other destinations.
Shirley loved babies and was thrilled to be “Nana” to eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
She was known for the love of her family, Christmas lights, decorating her display window at 70th and Holdrege to the delight of those passing by, garage sales, the way she kept her home looking like new and her outgoing nature.
Shirley was preceded in death by her beloved husband Richard in 2016. Shirley will be remembered lovingly by her friends, and family including three daughters and their husbands Pat and Wade Remmenga, Cyndi and Barry Munyon, Barb and Scott Renken and grandchildren, Matt, Kristin (Michael), Kim (Ryan), Ashley (Nate), Abbey (Caleb), Mike (Cassie), Breanna (Casey), Stevie (Kelly) and eight great grandchildren.
Visitation with family will be Tuesday, May 15, 2018 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home 6800 So. 14th St.,
Service of Celebration of Life will be Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at 10:30 am at Vine Congregational United Church of Christ 1800 Twin Ridge Road.
