Ruby attended rural schools thru the 8th grade and graduated from Hickman High School in 1951. At 17, she began her career in rural schools in the area. She married Robert Russell on June 12, 1957 and they lived most of their married life in Hickman until they moved to Lincoln in 2000. She taught 5th grade at Norris School for 21 years, retiring in 1991, and then continued to substitute at Norris and Lincoln Public Schools until 2005. Ruby and Bob traveled to all 50 states and wintered in Arizona from 1992-2000 until Bob’s health became a factor.
She enjoyed playing cards and games with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her hobbies included reading, embroidering, and walking - especially after her heart surgery in 2005. She enjoyed camping with friends from 1992-2000 and playing many games of cards. She taught Sunday School for many years, was active in the Women’s Ministries, and checked Bible lessons for the Prison Ministries. She also enjoyed singing in the Lincoln Senior Chorus for many years. As a teacher, her desire was to help all students achieve to the best of their ability. As a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, her desire is for all to love Jesus and join her in eternity.
She is survived by her children, Dennis (Diane) Russell, Debbie (Bob) Jenkins, Denise (Mike) Arnold and Diane Brogan; grandchildren, Isaak (Holly) Russell, Courtney (Joe) Krings, Dr. Carrie Jenkins (Chad Kolbrek), Julia (Joe) Olynyk, Katie (Ryan) Greisen, Andrew Arnold (Rose Hull), and Harry (Kassy) Brogan; great-grandchildren, Grayson Jenkins-Senff, Leo and Dottie Olynyk, Gavin and Lauryn Greisen, Landon and Bentley Arnold, and Michael, Harrison, and Ryker Brogan. She is preceded in death by her husband, Bob; parents, Garrett and Marie Liesveld; and sister, Betty Weber.
A visitation for Ruby will be held Sunday, October 20, 2024 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, 6800 S. 14th Street, Lincoln, Nebraska 68512. A funeral service will occur Monday, October 21, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Hope Community Church, 4700 South Folsom Street, Lincoln, Nebraska 68523. In lieu of flowers, memorials are designated to the Friendship Home and the People's City Mission of Lincoln.
