Robert Lynn Tyler, 86, passed on May 20, 2022. He was born in Spalding, Nebraska on November 2, 1935 to Gerrit and Muriel (Stringfellow) Tyler. After the death of Muriel, Gerrit married Mollia Swanson. Upon graduation from Ainsworth High school, Bob got his degree in business from the University of Nebraska, where his love of Husker sports was born. It was during his time at the university that Bob met the love of his life, Kathy Vondra. They were married on October 5, 1957. To this union were born 3 children, Patty, Doug, and Debbie.
Bob was enrolled in ROTC, and went on to serve in the Army Reserves, attaining the rank of Captain. From there, he worked for the Department of Roads. He later began his 40 year career at Lincoln Telephone and Telegraph(Alltel), eventually working his way to CFO, retiring in 1998.
Bob was active in his church, St. Mark’s United Methodist, where he was a 60+ year member. He served in various capacities, using his leadership and financial skills, with his longest role being the early morning coffee and donut server for 30 years.
The community benefited from Bob’s servant heart. He participated in many community organizations, including Jaycees, Sunrise Kiwanis, Lincoln Chamber of Commerce, the Board of Lincoln Electric, and too many others to list. He often used his accounting gift by serving as financial officer or treasurer in the church and organizations he was a part of. Robert also was a volunteer for the Lincoln Children’s Zoo, where he could be seen driving the train. He also was a volunteer for Bryan East Medical Center for many years.
Bob loved all Husker Sports, win or lose. He held season tickets to football, baseball, and basketball, and rarely missed a game and supported the women’s teams as well. He loved to golf, and even got a hole in one. He taught his grandchildren that it wasn’t the score that mattered but the chance to be able to play (as well as many other valuable life lessons).
Bob was a loving husband to Kathy for 64 years. He was a wonderful father, and a patient and loving grandfather to his grandkids and great grandkids.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Kathy, children Patty (Rick) Sorensen, Doug (Carolyn) Tyler, Debbie (Jeff) Hoeft, grandchildren Kyle (Anna) Brown, Justin (Emily) Brown, Kristin (Tyler) Clark, Kaitlin Tyler, Kolbie Tyler, Korbin Tyler (Shelby-fiancee) Lukas (Stephanie) Sorensen, Lindsey (Mitch) Bradbury, Lisa Sorensen, and Lance (Mariah) Sorensen. Great grandchildren Hudson, Lincoln, Whitney, Bria, Kaylee, Mallorie, James, Everett, and Aven. Sister Marian Slaughter, Brother Van Tyler, cousin John and Lorraine Stringfellow. Son in law Stephen Scholtz, and lifetime friends Beth Honnen and Claude Reyman, many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, sister Phyllis Gaston and brothers in law Red Gaston, Don Tejral, Bill Slaughter, and sisters in law Marge Tyler and Loretta Tejral, and life time friends Dean Honnen and Yvonne Reyman.
Services will be held on Tuesday, May 24th 2022 at 11:00AM at St. Marks United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers memorials may be designated to Rock Steady Boxing in care of Lincoln Parks and Recreation or St. Marks’s United Methodist Church Foundation.
The family sends Bob off with our love as he embarks on his next accounting endeavor.
