John David Morgan, a dedicated educator, a proud veteran, and a tireless community servant, passed away on October 16, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of commitment, kindness, and love. He was born at home on March 10, 1941, in Polk County, Nebraska, and his life journey touched the hearts of many.
Growing up in rural Nebraska, John began his educational journey at country schools and later graduated from Exeter High School in 1958. John pursued higher education at Doane College and the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1969. He later obtained a Master's degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1974.
In 1964, John answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the United States Army. He spent much of his military service in Iran. During a leave from his duties overseas, he asked Janet, the love of his life, out on a date. Their courtship, sustained by heartfelt letters and reel-to-reel tape exchanges, laid the foundation for a beautiful and enduring marriage.
John's career in education started at a middle school in Ithaca, Nebraska. He went on to teach and then became principal at several Nebraska schools, including Millard, Crete, Raymond Central, Hastings, McCook, and Conestoga. He left an indelible mark on the lives of countless teachers and students. As a principal, John was a champion for all students, consistently demonstrating a commitment to their well-being and educational success. His leadership style was marked by a passion for creating a nurturing and inclusive learning environment where every student had the opportunity to thrive.
In addition to his roles in education, John was an entrepreneur who dabbled in various ventures, including selling insurance and farming equipment, trading commodities, and owning several donut shops throughout eastern Nebraska. After retiring in 2003, he worked part-time at Murray State Bank and drove cars for Sid Dillon.
John was also committed to his community, actively participating in his church, Lion's Club, and Kiwanis. He volunteered his time to many organizations, including Lighthouse and TeamMates. He was a man who believed in giving back, and his contributions enriched the lives of many, especially children.
He cherished the moments he spent with his family, creating memories with his wife, children, and beloved grandchildren. John liked to travel and play cards with family and friends, and never met a stranger.
John is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Janet Morgan, daughter Angela Rosowski (husband Paul Rosowski), son Philip Morgan (wife Michelle Hrbek), grandchildren, Nicholas Walker, Mitchel Walker, Melanie Rosowski, Anna Rosowski, Erin Morgan, Benjamin Morgan, and Cooper Morgan, as well as brother Dennis Morgan (wife Kathy Morgan), brother- and sister-in-law (Dean and Gail Steinmeyer), and numerous nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his brother Jim Morgan and his parents, Pat and Elizabeth Morgan.
John's life was a testament to the power of dedication, education, and service. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Memorial donations may be made to St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, Lighthouse, or Alzheimer’s Association.
